He was awarded a diploma of honour for his wines at the international competition in Brussels in 1898. Frédéric Théodore Trimbach, born in 1875, was one of the founders of the Syndicat des Négociants et Viticulteurs d'Alsace. He transferred the estate to the medieval town of Ribeauvillé shortly after the First World War. Today, the family vineyard has a truly international reputation and is run by Hubert Trimbach, his nephews Jean and Pierre, and his daughter Anne, the eldest of the 13th generation. Pierre Trimbach began working at the estate in 1979. The Trimbach estate covers 153 hectares, 52 of which are owned. Of the total planted area, Domaine Trimbach has 9 hectares of red grape varieties (100% pinot noir) and 144 hectares of white grape varieties (43% Riesling, 21% Pinot blanc d'Alsace, 20% Gewurztraminer, 15% Pinot gris and 1% Muscat à petits grains blancs). The estate's vines are on average around forty years old and spread over more than 50 plots and 9 villages, including Bergheim, Ribeauvillé and Hunawihr. The Domaine Trimbach vineyards are planted on predominantly limestone soils. It benefits from a unique Alsatian micro-climate, as Alsace is protected by the Vosges mountains. Pierre Trimbach cultivates his vines with respect for the environment, using integrated farming methods. The vines are treated organically and the grapes are harvested by hand. Domaine Trimbach produces over a million bottles a year. The wine is made in the traditional way, in young and old barrels. There is no chaptalisation or malolactic fermentation for the whites. Domaine Trimbach's wines are beautifully straightforward, often dry and taut, a hallmark of the estate's style. The wines have good ageing potential. Certain terroirs are particularly outstanding, such as the Alsace Frédéric Emile (exceptional value for money) from the Ribeauvillé terroir, which faces south and south-east, and the Alsace Clos Sainte-Hune (which needs to be aged for at least 20 years). The latter is located in the Rosacker Grand Cru, which produces straightforward, lively and well-balanced wines.
