Bel Air Marquis d'Aligre

Appellation d'origine contrôlée, an outstanding Margaux

The wines of Château Bel Air Marquis d'Aligre

Château Bel Air Marquis d'Aligre was not included in the 1855 classification because it did not sell its wines to the Bordeaux wine trade, whose brokers were responsible for establishing the famous Médoc wine classification. It was only included in the 1932 crus bourgeois classification, which recognised 6 exceptional crus, including Château Poujeaux (Moulis). Jean-Pierre Boyer has owned Château Bel Air Marquis d'Aligre since 1950. This 13-hectare estate is planted on light soils that give the wines a great deal of elegance. His vineyard, which adjoins that of Château Margaux, is made up of 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot.

What makes Bel Air Marquis d'Aligre so special is that, in addition to producing a single wine, it has been made exclusively in concrete vats since 1950 for both fermentation and ageing (for a minimum of 3 years), unlike all the other Bordeaux châteaux that use barrels. In addition, the estate only produces its wine during good vintages, which is why it has deliberately avoided the 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1997 vintages. The wines produced here combine finesse and intensity of flavour, are singular, and can sometimes be reminiscent of certain Burgundy wines, due to their finesse. To appreciate the complexity of these wines, it is advisable to let them age for more than 20 years, and to drink old vintages such as 1961, 1970, 1982 or 1990, which are recognised as particularly successful. As the price of château wines is not speculative, it is advisable to buy these bottles as part of an older vintage, such as an anniversary vintage, so that they can be enjoyed at their best.
