Mas Jullien

A pioneering estate in the Languedoc renaissance

The Mas Jullien estate

The Mas Jullien estate, founded in 1985 by Olivier Jullien and Jean-Philippe Granier, is located in the village of Jonquières, in the Côteaux du Languedoc and Terrasses du Larzac appellations. The vineyard covers 20 hectares, including 4 hectares of white grapes (carignan blanc, chenin, clairette, grenache, viognier and petit manseng). The Mas Jullien estate has long been a forerunner and a synonym for excellence in a Languedoc region that has tended to focus on quantity. Olivier Jullien, along with a number of other star winemakers (such as Gauby, Daumas Gassac and Grange des Pères), enabled the Languedoc to produce top-quality, top-range wines, which were quite rare in the region in the 1980s.

The Mas Jullien estate produces red, white and rosé wines and remains at the pinnacle of Languedoc wine production, with unfailing consistency. Olivier Jullien is once again working his vines organically, after having given up certification for a time out of a desire for independence. The red wines from Mas Jullien (Carlan, Autour de Jonquières, Etats d'Ames) are long-lasting and elegant, with a balance that approaches perfection. The new Lous Rougeos cuvée comes from a balcony of limestone scree at a high altitude (400 m), with a unique flavour and an explosive, finely peppery finish. Mas Jullien's red wines are particularly tasty, with an ageing potential of 10 to 15 years, and they are never as good as after 7 to 10 years in the cellar, allowing them to surpass the closed phase of certain vintages in their youth. The white wine from Mas Jullien is a subtle example of complexity and freshness, with hints of white flowers, aniseed and fennel. It can be kept almost as long as the red, but can still be drunk young. It is produced as a simple IGP Pays de l'Hérault thanks to its original combination of white Carignan and Chenin. The estate also produces a very slender but deep rosé wine, which is highly recommended in summer as a food and wine pairing with grilled meats. Finally, a liqueur wine with an orange-pink colour called 'Cartagène' (100% Cinsault) is also marketed by the estate, to be drunk as an aperitif or with dessert. The reputation of this critically acclaimed estate (with 3 stars in the RVF green guide) has endured for 30 years, and all its wines are highly recommendable. The value for money here is undeniable, given the high quality of the wines on offer. Mas Jullien wines are a must-have in your cellar!
