Joined by his son Rodolphe in 2005, Domaine du Bel Air is renowned in the Bourgueil terroir for its heritage of old Cabernet Franc grapes grown on some of the finest terroirs in Bourgueil. Thanks to this heritage, Domaine du Bel Air produces wines of great intensity, combining concentration, finesse and elegance. Pierre Gauthier has taken advantage of his organic conversion to develop a range of wines from his different terroirs, which is now very comprehensive. In 2005, he acquired a parcel of vines known as 'Clos Nouveau', and after restoring the walls and working the soil, the decision paid off. The 2007 vintage saw a veritable renaissance of this 'Clos Nouveau'. This cuvée has added a very fine wine to the Domaine du Bel Air range. A very coherent range comprising 5 Bourgueil cuvées: Jour de soif, Les Vingt Lieux-dits, Les Marsaules, Grands Monts and Clos Nouveau. It's worth noting that the vintages of the last three cuvées don't leave the domaine for another 4-5 years, as Domaine du Bel Air is fortunate enough to have its own ageing cellar in old caves carved out of the tufa rock. The last 3 vintages are aged for 24 months in barrels or demi-muids, with the proportion of new wood varying from vintage to vintage. The cuvée de Bel Air Jour de Soif is matured in vats and bottled early in the spring following the harvest. As its name suggests, this is a simpler, sweeter wine to be drunk young and fruity. The cuvée Bel Air les Vingt Lieux Dits is matured in 2- or 3-wine barrels for 12 months, and offers a full, frank and concentrated palate, with pure, intense and delicate fruit (cellar for 4 to 5 years). The Bel Air Les Marsaules cuvée is more complex (aged for 24 months), with fine earthy and smoky notes. The cuvée Bel Air Grands Monts is a blend of blackberry, blueberry, sweet spices and cedar, with a fresh, elegant, pure and easily digestible palate and a striking length. Finally, the Bel Air Clos Nouveau is even more ambitious, a magnificent wine that can be kept for 10 to 15 years. All the Domaine du Bel Air wines are to be recommended among the excellent wines of the Loire.
