The wines of Clos Naudin de Foreau

The Clos Naudin estate was founded in Vouvray in 1910 by Armand Foreau. He was succeeded by his son André, before his own son Philippe Foreau produced his first vintage in 1982, bringing the estate's colours to the fore. Since 2007, Vincent Foreau, Philippe's son, has been working alongside him, consistently maintaining Clos Naudin's reputation as one of the finest white Loire estates. Here, the notion of terroir is not an empty word, and in Vouvray, the aim of the Clos Naudin estate is to enhance the microbial life of the soil, while respecting ancestral traditions and following an organic logic. The grapes are harvested by hand and meticulously sorted to produce sparkling, still, dry, semi-dry or sweet wines.

No chemical weedkillers or pesticides are used on their almost fifty-year-old vines, instead organic ploughing and fertilisers are used. The estate has been certified organic since 2015. The magnificent Chenin vines flourish on the majestic Perruches terroir, producing juices that are the truest expression of the soil and climate. The clay and flint soils of Les Perruches, with varying depths overlying the tufa subsoil, give the wines elegance, finesse and enormous ageing potential.

In terms of Foreau wines, the fine bubbles add tension and salinity to the sparkling Vouvray wines. The dry wines from Clos Naudin are superbly taut, even when very ripe, giving them exceptional cellaring potential. Foreau's semi-dry wines are pure and long on the palate, and are ideal for food and wine pairing to bring out the best in them. Particular attention is paid to the development of botrytis, so that 40 to 100% of the grapes are affected. Successive selections are then made for the Moelleux Réserve, and the richest selection is used to produce the exceptional cuvée Goutte d'Or, which has only been produced four times, in 1947, 1990, 2011 and 2015. The golden grapes are destined for the classic sweet Vouvray. The slow fermentations are due solely to indigenous yeasts, and the gentle ageing without new oak, which leaves room for the vintage effect, which means that each year is different, depending on the climatic profile of the vintage. On tasting, the wines are straightforward and well-balanced, with long, luscious finishes. The complexity that sweet wines can deliver is magnificent, accompanied by the delicate tension and liveliness of the Chenin grape, here at its best. Tasting wines from magical vintages such as 1947 is enough to convince you that such bottles can only be exceptional, and thus deserve their place in the pantheon of great Vouvray wines.
