It is guaranteed to age for 25 years in good years, and you only need to drink a vintage like 1998 to be convinced that this is a great wine for laying down. Vieux Télégraphe white is made from 40% Clairette, 25% Grenache blanc, 25% Roussane and 10% Bourboulenc. More floral than fruity, it has remarkable balance and freshness. However, it is best drunk within the first 4 years of age, or aged for 8 years or more in great years. Production is around 25,000 bt/year. The estate also produces other cuvées of Châteauneuf du Pape, including the 'Piedlong' cuvée (11 Ha), which is located on the stony plateau of Piedlong and a small part on Pignan: it is made up of 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre, and gives a rich but fresh finish, accompanied by a fine minerality. Another cuvée in the range is 'Télégramme' (30 hectares), made from the estate's vines that are less than 30 years old and also located outside the 'La Crau' and 'Piedlong' sectors. A Châteauneuf that is more accessible when young, and more supple. The latest cuvée is the white "Clos de la Roquette", 3 hectares in the locality of La Roquette (made up of a third each of Roussane, Clairette and Grenache Blanc), with a production of 14,000 bottles to be consumed within 4 years of the vintage. Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe produces some fine wines, and while the reds are highly regarded and have received excellent ratings from international critics, they are well worth seeking out by wine-lovers who will nevertheless need to be patient to enjoy them at their peak. The prices and quality of Vieux Télégraphe wines are similar to those of Beaucastel.
