The wines of Domaine Georges Vernay

This emblematic Rhône Valley estate, located at the foot of the Coteau de Vernon in Condrieu, has been in existence for three generations and was founded in the 1930s. Renowned by many critics, including Robert Parker, as "Monsieur Viognier" or the "Pope of Viognier", Georges Vernay has contributed to the development of this grape variety and the Condrieu appellation worldwide. In 1996, his daughter Christine Vernay, assisted by her brother Luc, took over the 16-hectare estate. By 2010, the Georges Vernay estate had grown to around twenty hectares. In 2014, Christine Vernay became a member of the Académie du Vin de France. She continues the family tradition and the work carried out by her father Georges, who died in May 2017.

The first hectare of Viognier grapes was planted in 1938 on the family estate, which became Domaine Georges Vernay in 1953. His father Francis Vernay ran the estate and grew fruit trees rather than vines. When he arrived at the estate in the 1940s, Georges Vernay was convinced that growing grapes, and Viognier in particular, on a terroir as exceptional as Condrieu, was a key factor in the region's development. Georges Vernay decided to buy several plots, plant others and open the region's first wine-tasting cellar. He was also president of the Condrieu appellation for some thirty years in the 1960s.

Among the cuvées from the Georges Vernay estate, Coteau de Vernon in the Condrieu appellation, made exclusively from Viognier, has a pale colour and a beautifully complex bouquet of stone fruits such as apricot. The same fruity notes are found on the palate, with a liquorice finish. This wine can be enjoyed between 2 and 15 years. The Côte-rôtie Maison rouge, produced in the south of the appellation, is made from 100% Syrah. With its ruby-purple-black colour, this wine expresses notes of black fruit, smoke and spices. On the palate, there are silkier notes of liquorice and cigar box. This is a wine with very good ageing potential. Les Chaillées de l'enfer in the Condrieu appellation (100% Viognier) offers fine balance and an explosion of aromas. The palate is mineral with exotic fruit flavours. The finish is beautifully bitter. The Condrieu Les Terrasses de l'empire is a typical fruity wine with white peach aromas and a lovely freshness. The cuvée Le Pied de Samson, made exclusively from Viognier, has a pale gold colour and a nose of stone fruit. Finally, in the Côte-rôtie appellation, the Blonde du Seigneur cuvée has very floral notes despite the wine's power. The nose is mineral with hints of black fruit. The palate is aromatic, with remarkable tannins that ensure a long, lingering finish.
