Chapoutier offers 4 white Hermitage cuvées: l'Ermite, Le Méal, de l'Orée and Chante Alouette. Domaine Chapoutier also offers no less than 5 Hermitage red wines: L'Ermite, Le Pavillon, Le Méal, Les Greffieux and Monnier de la Sizeranne. The white Hermitage, made from Marsanne grapes, the cuvée de l'Orée comes from the Murets area, the birthplace of the hillside white Rhone wines, and is chic and pure in character. Hermitage Le Méal for both red and white Rhone wines comes from a south-facing slope which reinforces the powerful, honeyed character of the Marsanne in the white wine, and in the red wine produces a smooth, opulent Syrah that should be kept for several years. L'Hermitage blanc Chapoutier cuvée l'Ermite delivers delicate aromas of very ripe white-fleshed fruit. The wine is very rich, very round, very complex and long on the palate. It can be aged for up to 30 years. Hermitage blanc Chapoutier cuvée l'Ermite delivers delicate aromas of very ripe white-fleshed fruit. The wine is very rich, very round, very complex and long on the palate. It can be aged for up to 30 years. L'Ermite rouge, 100% Syrah from a granite terroir, delivers aromas of black fruit with hints of spice and ink: its tannins are powerful yet velvety, with notes of pepper and smoke; its length is exceptional. The cuvée Les Greffieux is only available as a red wine, and its more clayey terroir gives the wine a generous, accessible and delicious character. Finally, Hermitage Le Pavillon, made from a selection of plots in the Bessards area, on granite and crystalline soil, delivers powerful notes of tar and smoke, graphite, raspberry, blackberry and liquorice. Very complex on the palate, with a powerful but velvety and well-balanced attack and a long finish of cocoa and liquorice. A wine for the future that should be kept for at least 15 years. In the M Chapoutier range, the Cote Rotie cuvées La Mordorée and Nevé dominate, while Quatuor and Les Bécasses are excellent, more affordable alternatives. The Condrieu Coteau de Chery is rare and refined. The Chateauneuf du Pape cuvée Barbe Rac is full-bodied and fleshy, and the Saint Joseph wines Les Granits and Le Clos are at the very top of the appellation. Domaine Chapoutier also offers wines from the Cotes du Rhone, Crozes Hermitage and Cornas appellations. Mr Chapoutier's entire range of wines is highly recommendable.
