The history of the Laurent Combier estate, located in Pont de l'Isère in the Drôme and now covering around 30 hectares, dates back to the 1950s, when the Combier estate made its living growing peaches and apricots. Maurice Combier decided to cultivate a few plots of Syrah, and when he took over in the early 1960s, the Combier estate sold all its wine production to local workers in the Rhone Valley, and then to the Tain l'Hermitage wine co-operative. His son Laurent, more interested in viticulture, joined him at Domaine Combier in the late 1980s, and convinced of the great potential of the Crozes Hermitage appellation, pushed his father to expand Domaine Combier. A cellar was built and the first vintages of Domaine Combier were the 1990 and 1991 (famous in the Rhône Valley). Julien Combier (Laurent's son) has been working alongside him at Domaine Combier since 2014. The Laurent Combier estate has been organic since the 1970s, and the magnificent Syrahs are of great consistency and finesse.

The quality of the wines produced is excellent, and the terroirs located on the clay-limestone plateau with the pebbles of Pont-d'Isère produce wines that are among the best in the appellation, very seductive and of a high technical level. Clos des Grives rouge, a pure Syrah from fifty-year-old vines and a flagship cuvée of the Northern Rhone, reveals all the magnificent potential of Crozes Hermitage wines. It remains true to its appellation in its strength and substance, but needs to be kept for 5 to 10 years. This cuvée competes with the very fine cuvées of the 'king' Alain Graillot (another historic Crozes Hermitage producer). Combier Clos des Grives Blanc is a superb cuvée made from 95% Roussanne, full-bodied and very ripe, with a very mineral finish. As for the red wines, Combier Cuvée L is delicious and fruity, and the Cap Nord cuvées (in Saint Joseph and Crozes Hermitage) retain the imprint of their respective terroirs, and offer some very fine juices. In great vintages, the different cuvées from the Combier estate offer remarkable ageing potential, and even though the estate now also offers an entry-level range of wines for the wine trade called Laurent Combier, all the cuvées are highly recommendable.
