...gifted with a remarkable strength of character, she managed her business successfully and had the intelligence to acquire vines in some of the best Crus, in Bouzy, Verzy and Verzenay in the Montagne de Reims, gradually building up the Veuve Clicquot House's exceptional heritage of 286 hectares of vines. She also designed the famous yellow label that is used the world over to identify a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne at a glance. Bought by the LVMH group in 1987, the Veuve Cliquot brand offers a fairly narrow range of cuvées, all made from a majority of Pinot Noir grapes. The best-known cuvée is Veuve Clicquot's Carte Jaune, a Brut sans année, a fresh, slightly vinous cuvée whose Pinot Noir dominance provides the structure typical of Veuve Clicquot wines, while a light touch of Pinot Meunier completes the roundness. The Chardonnay gives it the elegance and finesse needed for a well-balanced cuvée made from a blend of around 50 to 60 different crus. Traditionally, this cuvée is made up of 50-55% Pinot Noir, 15-20% Pinot Meunier and 28-33% Chardonnay. 30 to 40% reserve wines, the oldest of which are up to 9 years old, ensure the consistency of the Veuve Clicquot style. The nose is powerful, initially fruity (white fruit, dried fruit), then vanilla and brioche. On the palate, the attack is frank and dynamic, then gives way to a fruity harmony. The wine has a certain structure, which places it in the family of structured, vinous Bruts, offering a fine balance between finesse and power. Then there is a range of vintage Champagnes, with a white Champagne and a rosé Champagne. At the top of the Veuve Clicquot Champagne range is 'La Grande Dame', a prestige Champagne that pays tribute to the woman who developed and gave the house its real impetus. The Veuve Clicquot "La Grande Dame" cuvée was created in 1962 and marketed for the first time in 1972 to celebrate the bicentenary of the House of Veuve Clicquot. This champagne cuvée is made from a blend of 6 of the House's historic Grands Crus: Aÿ, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzy and Verzenay for the Pinot Noir and Le-Mesnil-sur-Oger for the Chardonnay. Pinot Noir accounts for 90% of the blend, enhanced by 10% Chardonnay. On the nose, initial notes of white flowers such as jasmine, honeysuckle and vine blossom make themselves felt before opening up to fruitier nuances of apple, pear and peach. Hints of fresh almond and frangipane complete the bouquet. On the palate, La Grande Dame de Veuve Clicquot reveals more complex aromas of dried apricot, hazelnut, honey and candy sugar. The silky textures give the wine its personality, elegance and character. Maturation has allowed the wine to acquire depth and power. The Veuve Clicquot style will appeal to the widest possible audience, and the wines in the range are all highly recommendable.
