With an average age of 31 years, the 29-hectare vineyard is planted at an average density of 8,000 vines/ha on a soil composed of 25% clay and 75% old sand on a clay sub-layer. The vines, which are cultivated using environmentally-friendly methods, are divided into three grape varieties: Merlot (81%), Cabernet Franc (20%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (3%). The estate has a particularly modern and original winery, designed by the famous designer Jean Nouvel and built in 2014. The exterior is made of red metal slats.
This purple-coloured Grand Vin is powerful and concentrated, with notes of blueberry, blackcurrant, liquorice, truffle and minerality. The tannins are precise and this wine can be cellared for between 7 and 20 years. The second wine is simpler in its expression. It has lovely suppleness and soft tannins, with notes of red and black fruit, and should be drunk after 4 and 8 years' cellaring. The greatest vintages of Domaine de La Dominique are 2015, 2014, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2000, 1998, 1990, 1989 and 1982, with scores from international critics and Robert Parker ranging from 88 to 93/100. The estate could have claimed the classification of 1er grand cru classé B in 1996 or 2012, but clearly did not. Reasonably priced, wine-lovers will be able to treat themselves to bottles of Château La Dominique wine.
