The Saumur-Champigny appellation vineyards on the left bank of the Loire are part of a long tradition of winegrowing, stretching from Saumur to Montsoreau over 9 communes and more than 1,150 hectares. The soil here is covered with sand, gravel and clay, giving these wines a unique character. Made from Cabernet Franc (obligatory), Cabernet-Sauvignon and Pineau d'Aunis, the wines are fruity and develop typical red fruit aromas such as redcurrant and raspberry.
The region also produces white wines under the Saumur appellation (Chenin) and sparkling wines called Saumur Brut. The tuffeau (chalk) soils give the wines their distinctive minerality and freshness.
