The wines of Domaine Chandon de Briailles

Based in Savigny les Beaune (4 km north of Beaune) in Burgundy, and owned by the same family since 1834, Domaine Chandon de Briailles currently belongs to Count Aymard de Nicolay and his sister Claude, who have been managing it together since 2001. In 1934, the Comte inherited the estate from his grandmother, the Countess Chandon de Briailles, a relative of the famous Moët et Chandon Champagne house. The estate covers 13.8 hectares in the communes of Savigny Les Beaune, Pernand Vergelesses and Aloxe Corton.

Domaine Chandon de Briailles has been producing biodynamic red and white Burgundy wines since 2008. These wines are well-built, generous, unpretentious and age well, so they will gain in complexity with ageing. Domaine Chandon de Briailles produces mainly Grands Crus and Premiers Crus, including: 1 Aloxe Corton 1er Cru, 4 Corton Grands Crus red + 1 Corton white, 1 Corton Charlemagne, 3 Pernand Vergelesses 1ers Crus (including 1 white), 3 Savigny Les Beaune and 1 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets (production stopped in 2009). Vinification is very traditional: whole grapes, fermentation temperatures not exceeding 30°C, and little or no new wood...

The estate's red wines are light in colour, but very floral and refined in expression. Previously rather shy in their youth and revealing themselves with ageing, in recent years they have become much more expressive when young, without losing their capacity to evolve. The 2015 Corton Clos du Roi is magnificent in its elegance, finesse and depth, with an airy finish. It will evolve perfectly over the next 10 years. The 2015 Pernand Vergelesses 1er Cru île de Vergelesses has splendid bitters and a complex, floral finish. In its red version, this is a very great Pernand Vergelesses, racy and taut, ripe, tight but not astringent. The 2015 Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru les Lavières has superb, delicate tannins, is very airy, opulent and refined, almost drinkable. In 2016, because of frost, the Savigny les Beaune 1ers crus and the Pernand Vergelesses 1ers crus were downgraded to the Villages appellation due to a microscopic yield of 1.5 hl/ha. Wines will therefore be in short supply for 2016, but there are some particularly good 2015s to enjoy.
