The Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation is world-famous for its rounded pebbles, which absorb heat and diffuse it into the soil, helping the grapes to ripen and concentrate. Domaine Beaurenard is one of the few estates to grow all 13 grape varieties in the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation, although it concentrates on 4 grape varieties in the reds: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault, which they sometimes complement with Counoise, Muscardin, Terret noir and Vaccarèse. For the whites, a fairly traditional blend, Beaurenard wines include Clairette, Roussanne, Bourboulenc, Grenache blanc, Picardan and Picpoul.
Special care is taken with the vines, using herbal teas in particular to boost natural defences. Beaurenard produces wines that are highly concentrated but always elegant and refined, with a certain minerality that is typical of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir and gives the wines a long ageing potential. Used to tasting old vintages to demonstrate their incredible ageing potential, Domaine Beaurenard stands out with Châteauneuf-du-Pape from the 1950s and 1960s.
The Châteauneuf du Pape Beaurenard red is the estate's main cuvée, a well-balanced, relatively accessible wine, often with notes of garrigue, bilberry and cedar, and with fairly supple tannins. It can be drunk young or kept, like the magnificent Beaurenard 2015. This is one of the best value wines in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
Other vintages include Boisrenard Châteauneuf-du-Pape red and white, Gran Partita Châteauneuf-du-Pape red, a Rasteau red, Argiles Bleues Rasteau red, a Côtes du Rhône red and a rosé, as well as a Rasteau Vin Doux Naturel. Their red Rasteau is made from 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, from the finest slopes in the appellation. This Beaurenard cuvée is both concentrated and smooth. In order to produce such a pure wine, almost 20% of the harvest is often discarded to select only the best of the best. Extreme care for long, meticulous fermentations.
The 2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape blanc is considered to be one of Domaine Beaurenard's best whites, with aromas of acacia flowers and ripe pear. The palate is powerful, full-bodied but elegant, with a freshness and acidity that keep you on your toes. As for the reds, we'll never forget the exceptional 1998 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Boisrenard, made from vines aged between 65 and 90 years and rivalling the famous 1990. This wine exalts the senses and continues to maintain its peak and surprise, thanks to a modern structure and perfect mastery of ageing in wood (20% new oak).
