The history of the Sylvain Cathiard et Fils estate, located in Vosne Romanée on the Côte de Nuits, began in 1920 when Sylvain's grandfather (Alfred Cathiard), after working at the Domaine de la Romanée Conti and the Domaine Lamarche, acquired several plots of vines in some very fine terroirs on the Côte de Nuits. His son André, who joined the estate in 1940, developed bottling at Domaine Cathiard, and bought a magnificent parcel of vines in Vosne Romanée 1er cru Malconsorts (neighbouring Grand Cru La Tâche).

After creating a small estate in his own name, Sylvain Cathiard took over the family vineyards (5.5 ha), succeeding his father in 1995. He now works with his son Sébastien, and plans to gradually hand over the Cathiard estate to him. Domaine Sylvain Cathiard et Fils is best known for the precision of its Pinot Noirs, produced from old vines in the Vosne Romanée appellation. The estate offers a wide range of cuvées, including : Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle Musigny Clos de l'Orme, Nuits St Georges 1er cru Aux Meurgers, Nuits-St-Georges 1er cru Aux Thorey (since 2006), Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru En Orveaux, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru aux Reignots, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru En Malconsorts and the famous Grand Cru la Romanée Saint Vivant (neighbouring the no less famous Grands Crus Richebourg and Romanée Conti). Here on the Vosne-Romanée finage, the great names and Grands Crus, guarantors of Burgundy's international reputation, are highly sought-after and reach record heights at auctions of the most prized bottles. Domaine Sylvain Cathiard et Fils is universally acclaimed by critics for the quality of its wines, which often shine in prestigious blind tastings. The simple Vosne-Romanée Village evokes aromas of raspberry, blackcurrant and ripe black fruit, accompanied by hints of sweet spices. The attack is frank and straightforward. On the palate, the feel is velvety and the aromas harmonious and subtle. The balance, precision and elegance of this vintage are the hallmarks of a top-quality Burgundy. Sylvain Cathaird's Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru aux Murgers is frank and clean, with aromas of wild berries. The tannins combine finesse, power and complexity with a broad but delicate structure. The finish is long. The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru aux Malconsorts from Domaine Cathiard is a blend of juicy red fruits, with notes of finely peppered cinnamon, coffee and cocoa. It has a smooth mid-palate underpinned by a fine, noble and racy minerality, with a very delicate, mellow woodiness and a long, powerful finish. A great wine for laying down. The wines of Domaine Sylvain Cathiard et Fils are matured in 50% new barrels for the village appellations, and in 100% new barrels for the Grand Cru. A great estate, whose entire range of wines is highly recommendable.
