Since his son Jean Boxler succeeded him the domaine Albert Boxler has reached the summit of the pyramid, and the wines are amongst the finest Alsace Grand cru made in the region. To reach that point, the Domaine Boxler relies on its superb patrimony of 14 hectares of vines, often found on extremely steep hillsides and of which a large portion are classified as Alsace Grand cru. The domaine Albert Boxler has managed to honour the nobility and potential of the Alsace Grand Cru Sommerberg (of which Domaine Albert Boxler owns 4 hectares), a steep granit amphitheatre that makes for extremely difficult work, and the Grand cru Brand (of which Domaine Albert Boxler owns almost 2 hectares). Different other wines are made from numerous plots, often named by the first letter of the plot (such as E for "Eckberg", D for "Dudenstein" and W for Wiptal), and each is of an exceptional level, transcribing the nuances of each terroir. Patience is required with at least a few years of cellaring to best appreciate the subtlety of each cuvee, but even in their youth, one can appreciate the purity of Albert Boxler style as well as their exceptional freshness and minerality. Albert Boxler Grand cru "Brand" ("burnt" literally) is one of the warmest and precocious plot in Alsace as it is exposed south and south east towards drying winds. The soil is composed of nutrient-poor granit and the decomposition of black micas has created this exceptional terroir by allowing the minerals to settle down, providing the source of the minerality of Albert Boxler wines, as the old vines of Riesling plunge deep into the ground to counteract the dryness on the surface. The wines from the Brand plot are extremely pure, oozing with finesse and aromatics, especially their florality, and greatly benefit from extended ageing. Albert Boxler Grand Cru Sommerberg (literally "summer hill") is situated on a steep hillside of about 45°. Extremely difficult to cultivate, this south facing parcel owned by the Domaine Boxler is around 60 years old with yields inferior to 30 hl/ha (half of the authorised yields). The wines from Sommerberg plot are intense, even more marked by citrus notes than the Grand cru Brand, but with a similar vivacity and minerality, so highly sought after by connoisseurs. The immense complexity of their wines only develops with age, they thus necessitate at least 7 to 15 years of cellaring. The Domaine Boxler make wines of great finesse, tension and crystalline, wholly recommendable to amateurs looking for wines that faithfully translate the identity of their terroir of origin.
