Plageoles

The wines of Domaine Plageoles : purchase at the best price !

This family estate in the south-west of France, located in the north of the Tarn in the Gaillac appellation area, was founded in the 19th century. At that time, Jules Plageoles, a farm labourer, grew vines as well as fruit trees and cereals. In 1970, the estate took a new turn when the Gaillac appellation was opened up to red wines. Native grape varieties were planted, in line with the estate's desire to cultivate local grape varieties in order to highlight Gaillac's heritage. Because of his originality, Robert Plageoles was excluded from the Gaillac AOC syndicate.

His son Bernard joined him on the estate in 1983 and planted local grape varieties such as ondenc, loin de l'oeil and mauzac, always with a view to perpetuating the estate's tradition and promoting its heritage. It was at this time that the estate switched to organic farming. Thanks to the famous gastronome Jean-Pierre Coffe, the wines of the Plageoles estate were put on the map and enjoyed dazzling success. The Plageoles family are considered pioneers in the development of local grape varieties and ancestral techniques in the Gaillac appellation. Today, the estate consists of two holdings: Domaine des Très Cantous in Cahuzac sur Vère (family property) and Domaine de Roucou-Cantemerle in Castelnau de Montmiral. In total, the estate covers 35 hectares of vines: 9 hectares of red and almost 26 hectares of white. The vineyards are planted on clay-limestone soils, which give the vines greater resistance. The estate produces around 100,000 bottles a year. The wines of Domaine Plageoles are remarkable and are among the best in the South-West. The estate has made a major contribution to the rediscovery of Gaillac's historic or extinct grape varieties: Ondec , Mauzac roux, Mauzac noir, Verdanel, and offers a wide range of single-varietal cuvées. In red, the cuvée Prunelart is one of the estate's historic cuvées, a grape variety also known as côt à queue rouge, cultivated since the 15th century. It has notes of fresh plum and liquorice, with even a hint of leather. With more specificity and originality, the white cuvée Plageoles Vin d'Autan (white ondenc grape variety) is a sweet wine par excellence. Another original and rare white wine is the Vin de Voile dry cuvée (Mauzac roux grape variety), which offers fine balance and spicy, dried fruit aromas.
