Etienne Calsac

The vine plots are spread-out over 2.8 hectares and three villages: Avizé and Grauves in the Côte des Blancs and Bisseuil in the Marne Valley. The house also counts one of the rare "Clos" in Champagne amongst its holdings, bottled under the name Avizé Grand Cru Clos des Maladries. The lion's share of their vines, aged around 30 years, are planted in Chardonnay on clay and limestone soil and the Maison is certified both "Haute Valeur Environnementale" and "Viticulture Durable en Champagne" (sustainable certifications).

After having been impressed by some old Champenois varietals during a tasting, when he took over the Estate, Etienne Calsac decided to plant three of them: Arbane, Pinot Blanc and Petit Meslier. Together these previously frowned-upon and all but forgotten grapes (in Champagne at least) make up about 0.3% of the plantings in the region, yet almost equal parts of his rare cuvée "Les Revenants", aged in oak and released in around 1000 bottles a year. The supple wine offers a delicately floral and herbal nose with lovely bitter notes on the finish. "L’Échappée Belle" is 100% Chardonnay blended from three parcels (planted in Bisseuil, Grauves and Avizé) grown on clay and limestone soil, with a dosage of 4g and includes 30% of their reserve wine from their in-house solera. It's a vibrant, mineral and fresh Champagne ideal to drink on it's own, however production is limited at around 5,500 bottles a year. Etienne Calsac's "Les Rocheforts", also 100% Chardonnay, comes from a single First growth parcel planted in Bisseuil on chalky limestone soil and hovers at around 3,500 bottles a year. The maison Etienne Calsac also produces a Champagne rosé called "Rose de Craie". It's delicate aromas of wild red fruit should be more available to enjoy, however the production is limited to a measly 1,300 bottles a year. Etienne Calsac sees working the soil, respect of the vines and biodiversity as inseparable parts of a whole. Vegetation is allowed to grow around the vines and the soil is worked with the help of a horse-drawn plow. It's an Estate to discover and Etienne Calsac champagnes are sure to win over any fan of terroir Champagne.
