Jean-Baptiste has brought biodynamic practices to the Arena estate and Antoine-Marie is more dedicated to winemaking. In 2014, Antoine Arena divided up his estate, handing over 1/3 to each son, who started production in their own names, while keeping one of the Arena estate's historic plots: Morta Maio. Although there has been wine production in the Arena family for several generations, it was Antoine Arena who really developed the Arena estate, expanding it from 3 hectares in 1980 to almost 14 hectares containing the best terroirs in Corsica, including the famous parcels that have made Antoine Arena wines famous: Grotte Di sole and Carco. These two plots (3 hectares each) are the embodiment of Antoine Arena's determination, planted with Vermentino and Niellucio, indigenous Corsican grape varieties. The Carco parcel was born of the boldness of this visionary. His love for the soil also means preserving it. Thanks to chemical-free viticulture, regular ploughing and natural fertilisers (manure, pomace), Antoine Arena is restoring the fervour of his land. He has also planted a hectare of Bianco Gentile (outside the AOC, as a table wine), a forgotten Corsican grape variety that he hopes to revive. In the cellar, Antoine Arena's philosophy is the same, with minimal intervention: the wines are neither yeasted, nor fined, nor acidified.
Antoine Arena's wines are marked by balance and elegance, with no heaviness thanks to a perfect mastery of maturation. Arena's Bianco Gentile is fruity, light and pleasant to drink. The Carco white from the Antoien Arena estate stands out for its fine minerality and straightforward finish, while Arena's Grotte di Sole white is denser, with a richer, more mouth-watering texture. The red wines include Morta Maio, a blend of young vines with well-controlled tannins that produced a breathtaking 2006! The Carco Arena red is supple, the tannins just as present are silky and complex, and there's a hint of minerality from the chalky soil - superb harmony! Arena's Grotte Di Sole is just as powerful in white as in red, with greater maturity, density, roundness, richness and fullness on the palate. Antoine Arena also offers us a Muscat du Cap Corse (a mutated wine), a wine with great aromatic power, but with perfect balance because of its remarkable freshness. The wines have been very well received by the critics and rated highly by the guides, notably Robert Parker and RVF with two stars. After a first harvest in 2014, Antoine-Marie Arena has taken advantage of the superb 2015 vintage to make two new cuvées: 'Bianchi' and 'Memoria', a Corsican white wine and a Corsican red wine blended (grape varieties and vintages), which represent the Arena hallmark: Finesse, Elegance and Freshness!
