Domaine de Villaine is located in the village of Bouzeron, on the Cote Chalonnaise, which is particularly renowned for the quality of its Aligoté wines. The small size of the appellation makes AOC Bouzeron one of the secrets of Burgundy, where wines with a strong personality have been produced for centuries, particularly from the Aligoté grape variety. Aubert de Villaine is the illustrious owner of this estate, but it is true that Aubert de Villaine is best known worldwide as one of the co-owners of the Domaine de la Romanée Conti. The entire De Villaine estate was converted to organic farming in 1986, and synthetic products have been banned to ensure the natural balance of the vineyard. The philosophy of Domaine de Villaine is to express the terroir in its truest and most sincere form. Domaine de Villaine now covers 36 hectares of vines (with 3 grape varieties: Aligoté, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) following several acquisitions of plots in Saint Aubin 1er cru and Rully. The wine range comprises 12 different wines: Cuvée Aligoté Bouzeron, 3 Cuvées de Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise (2 Bourgogne rouges + 1 Bourgogne blanc), 5 Cuvées de Rully (3 premiers crus + 1 village blanc + 1 Rully premier cru rouge), 1 Cuvée de St Aubin 1er cru blanc, 1 Mercurey rouge and finally 1 Santenay 1er cru rouge. The high quality of Domaine de Villaine's wines has been praised by the critics. Domaine de Villaine uses very few new barrels so as not to add too much oak to the wines, which would mask the aromatic purity of the grape variety and the terroir. As a result, Domaine De Villaine's white wines are highly aromatic, with unctuous, vibrant, mineral mouthfeel and excellent length. The red wines are fresh, racy and perfectly balanced. The wines of Domaine de Villaine are full of energy and power, in a style of great purity. Even in rich, sunny vintages such as 2015 and 2018, balance remains the order of the day, and the terroir always makes itself felt. Domaine de Villaine's wines are juicy and expressive, combining good substance with a strong mineral imprint. The Bouzeron Aligoté has great ageing potential (over 10 years).
