Sylvie Esmonin

The entire vineyard is farmed organically, and Sylvie Esmonin has succeeded in raising the Esmonin estate to the very top of the Gevrey Chambertin estates, thanks to meticulous work on her vines and a highly accomplished sense of winemaking. The ripe, concentrated style of the wines, together with the use of new barrels made by the négociant Dominique Laurent, have given the wines a distinctive signature. What's more, Domaine Sylvie Esmonin has a major advantage in that it owns a very large parcel of Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St Jacques (1.6 ha in a single block). This is the most illustrious and renowned of all the Gevrey Premiers Crus, with a total surface area of 7 ha and divided between just 5 owners/producers (hence its rarity). The special feature of the Clos Saint Jacques 1er Cru, and probably its greatest strength, lies in its exposure to the sun, which means that the vines get almost an extra hour of sunshine a day, resulting in very ripe berries of rare concentration. With 1.6 hectares, Sylvie Esmonin owns the second largest part of Clos St Jacques. Although designated as a Premier Cru, Clos St Jacques often claims to have the makings of a Grand Cru de Chambertin, because it is said that even in bad years, a cuvée of Clos St Jacques will always be good. Domaine Sylvie Esmonin produces 2 other cuvées of Gevrey Chambertin village, one made from 30% whole grapes and fifty-year-old vines (to be kept for 6-8 years), and the cuvée Vieilles Vignes made from hundred-year-old vines, with a more mineral tone and to be kept for 10 years. An excellent red Burgundy called Cuvée Sylvie is also produced. As well as Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Sylvie Esmonin also produces a rare Volnay 1er Cru Santenots, whose structure and finesse place it at the top of the appellation's wines.
