Nicolas and David Rossignol oversee 13 hectares principally situated in Gevrey-Chambertin which, from 1997 to 2004, they slowly and fully converted to biodynamics. Their range entails 3 magnificent Grands crus that many a Burgundian wine lover only dreams of: Chambertin Grand Cru, Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru and Chapelle Chambertin Grand cru all of excellent quality and currently not stratospherically priced, at least for the moment! Thereafter are their 5 premier crus: Rossignol Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru "Clos Prieur", Rossignol Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru "Cherbaudes", Rossignol Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru "Aux Combottes", Rossignol Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru "Les Corbeaux" and Rossignol Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru "Petite Chapelle". Finally, their range is completed by 6 additional wines: a Rossignol Trapet Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, a remarkable Gevrey Chambertin "Les Etelois" (a climate that borders the Griotte Chambertin Grand cru), a Beaune 1er cru Les Teurons, a Beaune Les Mariages", a Savigny-lès-Beaune "Les Bas Liards" and finally a regional red Burgundy. The wines of Rossignol Trapet are pure, elegant, dense, but not over extracted, and are capable of going the distance. While slight traces of oak can be detected in their youth (particularly their Grand cru and first growths), they are far from modern in style and age admirably. Their inclusion of whole bunches, whose proportion varies from year to year, helps retain freshness in sunny vintages, such as the most recent string seen in Burgundy and elsewhere, and provide the matter necessary for great wines. The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru Petite Chapelle from Rossignol Trapet is sappy and distinguished, displaying hints of black fruit and spices carried by a refreshing and precise finish that will permit it to blossom over 10 years. Rossignol Trapet Chambertin is powerful and chock full of energy, dense and reserved in youth and accompanied by notes of licorice, but will hit its plateau and be a delight for those willing to wait at least 12 years. Great wines of terroir to lay down, Rossignol-Trapet has become a benchmark domaine of the prestigious village of Gevrey Chambertin.
