Various criteria contribute to the celebrity of Hermitage wines, such as the unique complexity of the terroir soils of this legendary hill, its very limited appellation area, and its southern exposure allowing it maximum sunshine. At Marc Sorrel, Les Roucoules, benefit from vines aged 60 and over, on limestone soils with iron oxides (white grape soils). The 1 ha plot of Meal, planted in 1945, is made up of large pebbles, on brown limestone and sandy-stony soils at the bottom of the slope; warm soils ideal for reds. Below Le Meal are Les Greffieux, on sandy limestones, with more soil and younger vines. Finally, under Les Greffieux, part of the Clos des Plantiers, with fatty clay-limestone soils, makes it possible to be located 2.5 ha of magnificent terroirs on this exceptional hill. By adding 1.5 ha of vineyard on Crozes-Hermitage, we arrive at 4 ha of the Marc Sorrel estate. 4 Hermitage Cuvees are produced, 2 classics in white Rhone and red Rhone, and 2 prestige cuvees from the oldest vines (aged 80, worked on horse), the Hermitage red Greal, a blend of localities Le Meal and Les Greffieux, and the Hermitage white Les Rocoules. The Hermitages of the Sorrel estate have been vinified in whole harvest since 2012, and generally require ten years to flourish. Le Meal is the archetype of very ripe Syrah, and the whole harvest brings brightness and precision in the aromas, especially in hot vintages (like 2015 for example). The Crozes Hermitage white from the Marc Sorrel estate is certainly one of the very best of the AOC, with exceptional volume and breed. In red wine, Crozes-Hermtage is very full and luscious; it is an excellent introduction to the great wines of the estate (but at a lower cost), because the quality and rarity of Hermitage bottles (depending on the vintage, between 7000 and 9000 bt produced on all 4 cuvees) help to create a demand far greater than the offer from the Marc Sorrel estate.
