The Saint Préfert estate boasts a number of distinct terroirs, which has reinforced Isabel Ferrando's choice to produce cuvées that are differentiated in terms of style, but with a strong common identity: cuvées with character. To help her in her quest, Isabel Ferrando has a vineyard at Domaine St Préfert that is an average of 60 years old, where massal selection has been practised since 1920, preserving the unique identity and style of Saint Préfert. As a new winemaker at Chateauneuf du Pape, she was supported and helped in the early years, but since 2009 she has been at the helm on her own, finding her own style. Since then, Domaine Saint Prefert has taken an impressive turn for the better, and is now one of the leading wines in the southern Rhône Valley of the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation. As Domaine Saint Préfert aims to produce fine wines, Isabel Ferrando never hesitates to limit yields, rarely exceeding 30 hectolitres per hectare. As a result, the juices are concentrated and full-bodied, reflecting the expression of the appellation's finest terroirs, which are cultivated using sustainable methods. In the Domaine St Préfert range, the classic Chateauneuf du Pape red is aged for 15 months in concrete vats, and has a well-defined fruitiness. The Colombis de Saint Prefert red cuvée is a pure Grenache from 80-year-old vines, aged for 18 months in truncated wooden vats to give it controlled power. The cuvée Auguste Favier de Saint Prefert is velvety and elegant, with restrained power. Finally, the cuvée de Chateauneuf Charles Giraud asserts its Provençal accent with powerful, wilder aromas, probably due to the high proportion of Mourvèdre (40%) in its composition. As a white Rhone wine, Chateauneuf is composed of 60% Clairette and 40% Roussanne. Smooth, round and delicately buttery, its voluptuousness makes it an excellent table companion. The best vintages for the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation are: 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2005, 2011, 2015 and 2017. Domaine Saint Préfert is therefore one of the benchmark wines in Châteauneuf du Pape, with brilliant, modern wines in an assertive style that will not leave lovers of Grenache and this magnificent appellation indifferent. To be recommended without moderation.
