Stéphane Montez from Domaine du Monteillet has been based in Chavanay in the Rhône since 1997, and his vineyard covers 38 hectares. 60% of production is devoted to red Rhône wines, but the magnificent white Rhône wines of Domaine Stephane Montez (almost 40% of production) should not be overlooked, including the Condrieu, of which there are 4 cuvées: "Chanson", long and harmonious, "Les Grandes Chaillées" which is broader and more full-bodied, the very limited "Grillette", and the "Candice" cuvée, which is a rare and precious sweet Condrieu.

In red wine, Domaine Montez has a magnificent parcel of very old Syrah in the Saint Joseph AOC, which is the source of the generous, gourmet "Cuvée du Papy", produced at the estate since 1989, with a powerful, full-bodied profile. Stephane Montez also produces two other St Josephs: 1 white and 1 red, for more immediate access, to satisfy the impatient. In the Côte Rôtie AOC, Stéphane Montez produces 3 cuvées: Côte Rôtie Fortis comes from the pale gneiss slopes south of Ampuis, a terroir which allows the power and minerality of the Syrah to blend perfectly with the fruit and roundness of the Viognier. The Côte Rôtie Bons Arrêts, a parcel from the locality of the same name, is the sole property of Stéphane Montez. The final Côte Rôtie, 'Les Grandes Places', comes from brown earth and is planted on one of the best terroirs in the appellation. Made up of 97% Syrah and just 3% Viognier, Côte Rôtie "Les Grandes Places" delivers intense black fruit aromas (blackcurrant, blueberry, prune), with hints of smoke and menthol. It has great depth on the palate, with tannins that are tight but well blended thanks to a long and ambitious ageing process, which gives the wine that extra fleshiness. Finally, since 2013, Stéphane Montez has been offering a Cornas produced on a tiny parcel of land he farms. This is a wild wine of pure Syrah, requiring a long 30-month barrel ageing period to tame its ardour. A great wine for laying down, it will improve over 15 years. The estate's entry-level wines - "La Syrah à Papa", "Le Petit Viognier", "Les blancs d'en face" and "Les Hauts du Monteillet" - are excellent introductions to the wines of Domaine Montez, and provide a good introduction to Stéphane Montez's style. The best vintages in the Côte Rôtie appellation are 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2005, 2011, 2015 and 2017.
