Very busy at the time, he delegated the upkeep of the estate to sharecroppers. Château Pradeaux is one of Bandol's best-known estates, comprising a superb vineyard of 21 hectares in production out of the 26 hectares of the Pradeaux estate. The vineyard was restored after the Phylloxera plague at the end of the 19th century, and Countess Arlette Portalis and her mother moved to Château Pradeaux as soon as the war broke out in 1939, when the vines were run by a manager and sharecroppers. Arlette Portalis wanted the Bandol appellation to be recognised at last, and in 1941, with the help of Pierre Le Roy de Boiseaumarié, co-founder of the INAO, she helped to create the AOC. La Comtesse launched the production of a red Provence wine made from 80% mourvèdre, 15% grenache noir and 5% cinsault, on this exceptional clay-limestone terroir of red earth and outcropping rock. Since 1983, Cyrille, his nephew, and his wife Magali have taken over, helped since 2011 by their son Etienne. Since then, there has been a perceptible shift in the wines towards greater finesse and tension, leaving nothing to be desired from the generation of modern Bandol wines with their colour and woody edge, which are sometimes more accessible in their youth. The grand cuvée of red wine from Château Pradeaux is the archetype of traditional Bandol, classic and finding its full potential as it ages, thanks to whole bunch vinification (relatively atypical in Bandol) and very long ageing periods of up to 48 months in old foudres, to allow it to mature (the Bandol appellation standards only require 18 months' ageing in foudres). This is how Château Pradeaux's Bandol red acquires its distinctive powerful, structured profile. The ageing potential of Pradeaux red Bandol is exceptional (15 to 30 years in the best vintages). The Bandol rosé from Château Pradeaux exhales strong notes of pomelo, and can be surprisingly full-bodied, both dense and vinous. This rosé is an excellent accompaniment to fine Provençal cuisine. Bottles of Bandol red from Château Pradeaux should therefore be reserved for patient wine-lovers, or a vintage at least 12 to 15 years old should be chosen, like the great years of 1998 / 2001 / 2004 / 2007.
