In 1968, Claude and Robert Hocquard bought the Tour du Bon estate and decided to extend the vineyard, which now covers 15 hectares, including 1 hectare of white Provence, on this singular terroir of limestone and sandy soils enjoying a variety of exposures, yet which is one of the earliest ripening in Bandol. 1987 saw the birth of the remarkable Cuvée de Provence Rouge Saint-Férréol, made from the 3 best plots of Mourvèdre on the Tour du Bon estate, and produced only in years when these plots could not be included in the blend for the classic Cuvée. In the early 1990s, the Tour du Bon estate took off under the impetus of Agnès Hocquard-Henry and 2 winemakers from the Loire (Thierry Puzelat and Antoine Pouponneau), producing wines with great personality that age harmoniously, in a rather delicate style and without excessive extraction or ageing. The white grape varieties (clairette, ugni blanc, rolle) are planted on south-facing sandy soils, while the reds (mourvèdre, grenache, carignan, cinsault) benefit from stony red soils that exacerbate the spicy character of mourvèdre, Bandol's emblematic grape variety. The Tour du Bon estate, which has been certified organic since 2014, produces concentrated yet balanced reds, dense whites and magnificent Provence rosés, all in the Bandol appellation. The white Bandol de la Tour du Bon delivers a soaring perfume of citrus fruits, white flowers and exotic fruits when young, then wax and honey as it ages. The Bandol rouge de la Tour du Bon is more accessible than the cuvée Saint Ferréol, but has a beautiful aromatic complexity thanks to the blend of mourvèdre, grenache, cinsault and carignan. The fruitiness of the Grenache brings kirsch notes to counterpoint the spicy, peppery accents of the Mourvèdre, and the Cinsault/Carignan pairing brings the whole together. The Bandol St Férréol is 90% mourvèdre and 10% carignan. It is an introspective, rigorous, straightforward wine, and its spicy/peppery palate leaves a mineral imprint reminiscent of sandstone. Notes of tobacco, truffle and lily mingle with the acidity of the carignan, which opens up the wine and makes it brighter in its youth. Some great years to look for: 1998 / 2001 / 2004 / 2007.
