Before deciding to settle in Anjou and acquire 1 hectare of Chenin, Grolleau and Cabernet Franc vines at La Faye d'Anjou in 2010, they began by working together with Mark Angeli and Benoît Courault, which is why they decided to go organic. In 2011, they added another 3 hectares to their vineyard, including a beautiful parcel called Clos des Grands Champs, a terroir with soil composed of spilite (volcanic rock) that is quite similar to the renowned Noëls de Montbenault (from the Richard Leroy estate). At Domaine Hodgson, the work is done in the vineyard, to obtain the best possible quality from the grapes and so avoid correcting the wine in the cellar with additives, resulting in pure, flavoursome wines. Vinification takes place in the cellar next to their house, in the heart of the village of Rablay-sur-Layon, in the most natural way possible, with Mai and Kenji accompanying the wines without any superfluous interventions. The cuvée Hodgson La Grande Pièce is a pure Grolleau Noir, produced at less than 1,000 bt/year, and matured for 12 months in barrels. A wine with a bouquet of red fruit and spices, fresh on the palate with very fine tannins and a well-balanced structure. Lacuvée Hodgson Faia: a dry Chenin, also barrel-aged, with notes of quince, lime blossom and hay. Cuvée Hodgson Les Aussigouins: this 100% Chenin, made more complex by ageing for 2 years, comes from a superb terroir. The beautiful aromas of white peach, pear and mirabelle plum at the right stage of ripeness mingle with subtle, delicious notes of lime blossom and acacia. This cuvée, with no added sulphur, charms the palate, perfectly combining a smooth, fleshy texture with a very refreshing minerality. The Hodgson O Galarneau cuvée is a pure Cabernet Franc, a blend of several parcels located around the commune of Rablay-sur-Layon, in particular Les Rouliers (also found at Richard Leroy). Fermentation is by indigenous yeasts alone, and the wine is matured in vats for 12 months. This is a surprising wine, with cherry and pepper aromas, combining deliciousness and fruitiness, with a hint of spice on the finish. The HODGSON estate is well worth discovering and following, as the wines on offer are far from the usual Anjou standards. Lovers of natural wines will be delighted.
