The domain has 32 Ha in Southern Rhone (including 3 Ha of white) of vines very well distributed in the best sectors (like the 7 Ha located on Crau); It has belonged to the AVRIL family for several generations, even if the original plot of the estate once belonged to the castle of Chateauneuf du Pape. After phylloxera, the Avril family developed the bottling of their wines from the beginning of the 20 th century, and they greatly contributed to the creation of the AOC in 1936.

Today, the grandson Paul-Vincent continues the tradition from the estate which produces only 2 cuvees of its wine (1 white wine and 1 red wine), without giving in to the fashion effect of parcels or luxury cuvees, and with the conviction that the wines of Clos des Papes must be fine and elegant , and resulting from a global blend of all the grape varieties and all the parcels of the estate (more than 20). Composed almost 2/3 of Grenache, the red blend also includes Mourvedre, Syrah and Counoise. The wines produced here show a remarkable depth, accompanied by a velvety texture and a richness resulting from a mature maturity but not excessive. The aging potential for red and white wines is excellent (15/20 years and over). Clos des Papes is the very type of the great Chateauneuf which ages slowly, but happily. However, the 2005 vintage in red obtained the title of best wine in the world awarded by the Winespectator, which had the effect of immediately putting the domain on the front of the world scene of the most sought-after wines. The extraordinary enthusiasm now passed following this distinction, it should be noted that over the last 20 vintages, Clos des Papes, has produced no poorly rated vintage, which attests to its regularity in producing bottles of excellence. The particularly fine and balanced Chateauneuf du Pape blanc is also of excellent quality, even if it only represents 10% of the volume. Finally, the estate offers a red table wine with exquisite fruit, from the youngest vines or sometimes downgraded. As young wines can sometimes have some rough tannins, it is preferable to wait for the wines before tackling them. The reputation of the estate having exceeded the borders of France, it is advisable to acquire the old vintages of the estate, which will delight enthusiasts keen on this appellation.
