Burgaud

The wines of Domaine Jean Marc Burgaud : purchase at the best price !

Jean-Marc Burgaud set up his own domaine in Villiers-Morgon in 1989, after training as a winemaker in Burgundy. In 1992, he took over the Côte de Py vineyards from his father-in-law. Most of the treatments are copper- and sulphur-based, but he does not claim to use organic methods. Indeed, Jean-Marc Burgaud prefers to keep some room for manoeuvre in the event of heavy pressure, as was the case in 2012 and 2013.

Now with almost 19 hectares of vineyards, Jean-Marc Burgaud has drawn heavily on his time in Burgundy to work the vines on a parcel-by-parcel basis (the famous Burgundy climats), resulting in the creation of various cuvées (Les Charmes, Grands Cras, Côte de Py, Javernières, James...). From his time in Burgundy, Jean-Marc Burgaud also brought a fine technical approach to the vinification and ageing of his wines (partial de-stemming and longer ageing periods depending on the year's profile). Such methods, adapted to the Gamay grape variety, aim for ever greater precision, and it has to be said that the whole range of his wines is superb. The critics have widely recognised Jean-Marc Burgaud's talent, with some of his wines receiving very good ratings, and even though the majority of the plots at Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud are located on the famous Côte de Py de Morgon, they are nonetheless clearly differentiated. The range of wines on offer is coherent, starting with light, fruity wines: Beaujolais Village (from granite terroirs) and Régnié. The Burgaud Morgon les Charmes and the cuvée Morgon Grands Cras de Burgaud, from a more clayey terroir, are still fruity wines, but with medium ageing potential. The Burgaud Morgon Côte de Py has a fuller, more serious profile, with delicate aromas of peony and burlat cherry, while retaining increased minerality. Burgaud Morgon Javernières, isolated as a cuvée since 2007, comes from a small parcel of fifty-year-old vines, giving it finesse and elegance. Finally, Jean Marc Burgaud's cuvée Morgon James is the archetypal deep, powerful and structured wine, which deserves to be laid down for between 5 and 10 years, depending on the vintage. A rare white Beaujolais cuvée is also on offer - made from Chardonnay replanted on a tiny (0.5 ha), century-old parcel of Gamay - but just over 1,300 bottles are produced each year. Domaine Jean Marc Burgaud is at the top of its game, proving that the Beaujolais crus can be remarkable when wine production is entrusted to artists.
