In Bordeaux, the cool and wet spring delayed flowering, leading to poor pollination. This was followed by a cool summer with heavy rainfall and a very rainy September. This latter month is crucial for full berry ripeness. As a result, the cabernets and merlots did not get the necessary temperatures to reach optimal ripeness. Therefore, the wines are not very concentrated, the reds are rather light with poorly integrated tannins, and the whites lack aromatic concentration.
Burgundy also faced very difficult weather conditions. Both the pinot noirs and chardonnays reached incomplete ripeness. Thus, the red wines do not have the usual aromatic complexity and have excessive acidity, as do the white wines, which have fairly underdeveloped aromas.
Champagne experienced similar conditions as the rest of France’s vineyards: a cold spring, a cool and wet summer, and a rainy autumn. Few Champagne houses produced vintage wines, as the base wines were weak in aroma, so the winemakers relied on their reserve wines to create blends.
The Rhône was not spared from the unfavourable weather conditions of 1965 either. In the Northern Rhône Valley, the syrah grapes suffered from a lack of warmth, producing rather lean wines. In the Southern Rhône Valley, grenache, mourvèdre, and syrah also struggled to reach optimal ripeness. The wines are less concentrated than usual, with diluted aromas. The whites, made from marsanne, roussanne, and viognier, suffered from the climate and resulted in wines that lacked balance due to excessive acidity.
Loire, Languedoc, and Alsace followed the same trend: these regions were also hit by the challenging weather, which severely affected the full maturation of the grape varieties in these terroirs.
Thus, 1965 is a vintage more known for its failures than its successes. However, a few renowned names, like Latour in Bordeaux, still managed to produce some great wines. The 1965 vintage remains a symbol and can be a meaningful gift for a special occasion, although enthusiasts would likely prefer the 1966 vintage, which followed this challenging year and turned out to be exceptional with ideal weather conditions!
