Our view on the 1971 vintage

Like the previous year, the 1971 vintage is of very good quality but of modest quantity. In red Bordeaux, all designations are good in 1971 (Grands Crus Classes of Margaux1971, Grand Crus Classes of Pauillac1971, Grand Crus Classes of Saint Estephe 1971 and Grand Crus Classes of Saint Julien 1971): all produced fine wines which quickly developed a finesse and a charm that can still last. The success was general in 1971 white Bordeaux and also in 1971 Sauternes wine (very subtle). Despite a difficult flowering (due to millerandage, a fruit-setting issue) , and severe hailstorms in the Cote de Beaune, the 1971 red Burgundy and 1971 white Burgundy managed well and produce small quantities of lovely wines, some of which (such as Chablis Grands Crus) can still give their best. In Champagne the yields were divided by 2.5 compared to 1970 (due to spring frost and hail) but some bottles are still excellent. The 1971 vintage is less powerful and structured than 1970 in the Rhone valley, but the 1971 Cote Rotie proves to be of long aging. Rather weak on Loire wines, 1971 was again a success in Alsace which produced good concentrated wines (pretty Rieslings).
