The Domaine Joseph Roty has a very impressive patrimony of 12 hectares of vines in Gevrey Chambertin and Marsannay, certain of their old vines, such as those in their Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru, are from plantings from 1881! The Domaine Roty exports over 80% of its wines, making them difficult to find in France. The house style is rich and sensual, often receiving generous notes in Robert Parker's guide and from other critics. Domaine Joseph Roty has built its reputation on 2 Grand Crus climats, Charmes-Chambertin and Griotte Chambertin, but also more accessible village appellations such as Gevrey-Chambertin or Marsannay. Once the grapes are ripen, Domaine Joseph Roty prefers to harvest late, lowering yields so as to produce enticingly delicious juice, but with ageing potential. Their style is rather modern and fine, using fully destemmed fruit, and ageing is long in newer oak barrels (of 1 to 3 wines). From the Marsannay village, 1er crus to Grands crus, the Roty style is a benchmark as it was a precursor to an extremely successful modern style, with remarkable finesse. The Domaine Roty puts all at its disposal to elaborate fruit-driven Pinots that are true to each terroir, refined and without an overt trace of oak. The wines of the Roty family are very seductive, with intense noses of generous fruit, ripe, balanced and silky tannins with much ageing potential, often time they are so dense and fleshy they need time. The Marsannay is expressive, distinguished, full and balanced with a dark robe and a rich and complex nose of morello cherries, blackcurrant, vanilla and spices that underline subtle oak. The mouth is wide, juicy, spicy with the tannins buried in the fruit with nice length in the finish. The Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru "Les Fontenys", bordering the Grand Cru Ruchottes Chambertin, is a wine with a large framework, earthier, more robust and of fabulous depth, with even more of a floral aspect. It's a wine of patience that will only deliver its subtle notes of beautiful Pinot Noir after 5 to 7 years. Absolutely recommendable.
