Our view on the 2008 vintage

In Bordeaux, the 2008 vintage was marked by disparities in fruit ripeness due to a capricious weather. Fortunately, the good weather from mid-September to the end of October made it possible to harvest in good conditions, but the harvest was spread out over long weeks in October. 2008 Pomerol and 2008 Saint Emilion are the two designations of the Right Bank of Bordeaux which have taken advantage of this complicated 2008 vintage, far better than in 2007. The best 2008 Medoc classified growths (2008 Pauillac, 2008 Saint Julien and 2008 Saint Estephe) produced good wines. Looking at the  2008 dry white Bordeaux wines, the year is considered rather good. The 2008 Sauternes wines were hardly hit by the frost in March, sometimes leading to up to 40% loss of buds in certain areas. For the 2008 Burgundy wines, the same capricious weather made the vintage much less homogeneous in red wine than in white wine. The Pinot Noir grape often lacked warmth and sunshine to ripen, producing fairly elegant wines, but sometimes hardened by a dominant acidity. The Cote de Beaune has produced good 2008 white wines, complete and complex with great aging potential. In Champagne, the 2008 vintage is very successful and will give beautiful concentrated and complete wines, which can be kept for a long time in the cellar. The Rhone wines got a fresher and lighter 2008 vintage compared to the very warm 2007 year (in alcohol degrees on the wines of Chateauneuf du Pape), with lovely wines, accessible more quickly. In Alsace, the 2008 Gewurztraminer and 2008 Riesling are very successful and to be cellared. Superb 2008 late harvest and SGN thanks to the sunny weather in October. In Loire wine, 2008 gives better white wines than red wines, and sweet wines are rare. Good white wines in Sancerre and Pouilly fume in 2008.
