Prior to succeeding his father Guy Castagnier as the head of the winery in 2004, Jérôme Castagnier spent time in the Republican Garde and is rather musically gifted, his instrument of predilection being the trumpet. From his beginnings at the Domaine Castagnier, Jérôme adapted quickly and helped elevate production to a demanding level of quality by renovating the facilities and bathing new life into the family winery. The range of wines is vast and especially rich in various Grand Crus such as Clos Saint Denis, Clos de Vougeot, Clos de la Roche and Charmes Chambertin. The Domaine Castagnier also proposes other Grand Cru via it's negotiant arm including Mazis Chambertin, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Bonnes Mares, Latricières Chambertin, Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux. Other notable family holdings are a Gevrey Chambertin village, a Morey-St-Denis 1er cru "Aux Chéseaux" a Chambolle Musigny village and the rare and magnificent Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru “Les Amoureuses”. Castagnier Chambolle Musigny village is a moreish wine displaying notes of creamy black cherries and spicy flowers. The Castagnier Morey-St-Denis first growth "Aux Chéseaux" is more based on black berries, blackcurrant especially, as well as being richer and more concentrated with velvety body. It finishes elegantly with a touch of freshness. The Castagnier Clos-St-Denis Grand Cru is magnificent, with notes of juicy cherries, blackberries, roses and peony. Densely structured, yet silky, intensely fruity with a harmonious, long and precise finish of liquorice. The Castagnier Charmes-Chambertin offers an expressive and precise nose of black fruits with roasted notes in the background, a soft and sensual attack, beautiful texture with great depth and silky tanins with a long savoury finish. Discreet, but with great finesse, the Castagnier Clos Vougeot offers an elegant and refined floridity. The attack is powerful and concentrated, oft-times tightly coiled in youth, yet with a long and complex finish of violettes, licorice and graphite. Finally, the Castagnier Clos de la Roche is captivating, with an intense nose of strawberries, blackcurrants, blueberries, peony and spices. Silky ripe tanins frame its rich body and powerful spices that conclude with a dynamic, long and velvety finish ending on a peacock's tail. A absolute must. The family holdings are about 70% of it's production, leaving 30% to their négociant wines, and we can't recommend them enough as they have been producing truly exceptional wines for over 10 years much to the pleasure of amateurs of great Burgundian wines.
