The vineyard covers a total area of 5.5 hectares and is made up of old Gamay vines aged between 60 and 90 years, located on mid-slope facing South/South-West. The plots of Morgon are scattered throughout the commune of Villié-Morgon, on soils of decomposed rock and friable schist: le Colombier, Corcelette, les Grands Cras and les Chênes. Domaine Chamonard's Fleurie cuvée is located in the renowned granite area of La Madone (named after the statue of the Virgin Mary perched at the top of the chapel overlooking Fleurie's most beautiful hillside at an altitude of 400 metres). Jean-claude Chanudet cultivates his vines with respect for the environment, while ensuring the optimum quality of his wines. Domaine Chamonard wines are wines of character, with a tendency towards finesse and balance, yet with surprising longevity. Quality is recognised here, and the domaine's wines, which are acclaimed by the specialist press, are increasingly being exported. The 0.5 hectare plot in Fleurie, in the Madone sector, faces due south, and is planted on pink granite terroir from which the vine roots draw their energy to produce a rich wine, with mature, concentrated and juicy fruit, aromas of black fruits and flowers, and a dense, round and enveloping palate. Fleurie can therefore be enjoyed young, but also after 6 to 10 years of ageing, which can only improve it and give it added complexity. Morgon wines are renowned for their ageing potential, and at Domaine Chamonard, after long macerations and ageing in old barrels, the style of the wines becomes brilliant and precise. Jean-Claude Chanudet often highlights the ageing potential of his cuvées. Morgon has a slightly wild nose that can be fiery, and its rich constitution and round fruit are accompanied by rather fine but present tannins, a guarantee of real ageing potential. What's more, Domaine Chamonard offers old vintages for sale, so you can appreciate the accuracy of the reviews of wines that are 10 years old or more. By producing wines of this style, Domaine Chamonard is confident in their ability to express themselves over time and to age with great ease and beauty. This contradicts the preconceived idea that Beaujolais gamays are not made to be kept for long...
