Quickly recognised as a talented winemaker, the small Domaine Petit Roy of just 2.1 hectares has already managed to make a lot of noise in the wine world. Seiichi Saito has happily expanded his range over multiple wines such as Bourgogne Aligoté, Bourgogne red, Côte de Nuits village, Hautes Côte de Beaune in red and white, Maranges red and white, Monthélie 1er Cru, Savigny les Beaune, including a Vin de France of Altesse. The Petit Roy vineyards are worked according to biodynamic principles, the reds are vinified using whole bunch so as to produce concentration and precise tannins. As for the whites, Domaine Petit Roy has chosen to moderate its use of oak barrels so that each terroir can express freely its identity. In fact, the Domaine Petit Roy uses no new oak during l’élevage (maturation) so as not to mark the wines, just very small doses of sulfur are employed to avoid any fault. The wines have a wonderful density, remarkable balance and beautiful texture. The cuvee Petit Roy "Les Lormes" is a good example of their house style of winemaking: moreish, wonderful body, juicy, fresh and of great finesse, even if it is a simple Appellation Bourgogne it is certainly worthy of a AOC Chorey les Beaune, so much is it a little jewel of delicious fruit. The nose is of raspberry, morello cherries, cranberry juice with a hint of earthiness. Its ageing in old oak has oxygenated the wine just enough to be accessible when the cork is pulled. The mouth is as superb as the nose, delicious acidic fruits with a firmness that asserts the length of its finish. The wines of the 2018 vintage managed to resist the high heat as the rains in the spring filled the reserves. For that reason, we find the similar intense fruit of 2015 and the extreme maturities of 2003, with a juiciness inherent to the more successful wines of 2018. 2019 was quite of a contrast as it was a hot and dry season, yet the wines remain fresh with sufficient acidity as well as a moreish quality sure to seduce amateurs of Burgundy. Petit Roy, the new born Domaine you're sure to hear more about. Don't hesitate to discover their wines before their fame runs their offer dry, as their production is extremely limited.
