Initially composed of vines, fruit trees, a forest and garrigue, the previous Domaine extended over 80 hectares and forced Alain Gallety to restructure the entire operation and to select varietals before arriving at its current 15 hectares. Since its first vintage in 1978, Alain Gallety was joined by his son David-Alexandre, who now runs the Domaine Gallety on his own and continues to offer their singular production, classified as AOC Côtes du Vivarais since 1999. The domaine produces reds that are made from of Syrah and Grenache and a white blend of Grenache blanc, Marsanne with a touch of Roussanne. Harvests are by hand and grapes are meticulously sorted in the vines, leading to low yields of 25 hl/ha and around 15 hl/ha for “Syrare”. For the reds the wines are traditionally worked via hand plunging followed by 2 years ageing in oak barrels. The range of wines is diverse, "La Haute Vigne”, “Domaine Gallety” in red and white, “Syrare”, “Emma” and “La Ligure”. The "Clos Latin" 2008 is highly sought after and a true rarity, as it's limited to just 256 bottles after having spent 46 months in barrel and is only released after 10 years. "La Haute Vigne”, from young vines (50% Syrah, 50% Grenache), is a moreish and red fruited wine of immediate pleasure to be ideally consumed in its first 3 years. The red "Gallety", also a blend of Syrah and Grenache (from 40 to 45 years old vines), is a distinguished wine of great drinkability displaying darker fruit, to be preferably opened 1 hour prior to tasting, and will age up to 8/10 years. "Emma" (a plot wine of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah) displays more finesse and complexity, with notes of black fruit, spices, great length and a potential to age from 10 to 15 years. "La Ligure" is made from of a majority of old vines of Grenache (85 years old) that yield only around 8hl per harvest, and spends 36 to 40 months in oak barrels. It is a rich and concentrated wine that benefits from 10 to 15 years ageing. Last but not least, is "Syrare" a blend of 70% Syrah and 30% old vine Grenache that ages for 2 years. It's a delicate wine that offers an intense fruit of black cherries and redcurrant, nuanced by forest floor and spices. Large and meaty, richly fruity yet mineral it sits on firm and refined tannins. Its finish displays subtle notes of violettes and pepper. Clearly, a wine to hold for at least 10 years. The Domaine Gallety produces Grand vins of the Rhône that are not to be missed!
