The history of Domaine Léon spans several generations. The Robert family's viticultural roots date back to the 1920s, but it was in the 1950s that Léon Robert, an iconic figure, transformed the estate by producing his own champagnes. Over the decades, family know-how was transmitted from Léon to Georges, then to Olivier, before Clément Robert took the reins in 2019.
After several experiences in French and international vineyards, Clément infused a new vision into the estate, introducing organic and biodynamic practices. He also chose to vinify exclusively non-dosed and vintage champagnes to highlight the typicities of each harvest. Today, Domaine Léon is recognised for its singular cuvées and profound respect for the terroir.
Established in the Côte des Bar, a region known for its rich and varied soils, Domaine Léon benefits from an exceptional terroir. Its 7.7 hectares of vines, situated around Landreville, are cultivated primarily with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier.
The estate's plots are distinguished by their limestone-clay-silt soil and ideal exposure, oriented south and south-west. This terroir confers great aromatic richness and marked minerality to the grapes. Through organic farming management and progressive adoption of biodynamics, Clément Robert promotes flourishing biodiversity and natural vine expression.
Among the estate's sustainable practices, natural grass cover alternating between rows, manual harvesting, and limitation of chemical inputs illustrate Clément's commitment to respectful and sustainable viticulture.
Vinification at Domaine Léon is based on a minimalist philosophy, aiming to reveal the essence of the terroir without artifice. The grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts, ensuring an authentic expression of each vintage.
The cuvées are aged in oak barrels, a method that brings aromatic complexity and an elegant patina to the champagnes. Each plot is vinified separately to preserve its unique characteristics before final blending. After prolonged ageing on lees, the champagnes are disgorged "à la volée" without dosage, allowing the wine's aromas and structure to fully express themselves.
La Grande Côte - Blanc de Blancs
The estate's emblematic cuvée, La Grande Côte is a Blanc de Blancs made exclusively from Chardonnay from the historic "La Grande Côte" plot. After a 10-month vinification in oak barrels and 17 months of ageing on lees, this cuvée captivates with its elegance and precision. Its minerality and finesse make it an ideal choice for grand champagne enthusiasts.
Derrière l'Église - Blanc de Noirs
Derrière l'Église is a 100% Pinot Noir Blanc de Noirs from an eponymous plot in Landreville. This champagne reflects the richness of the clay-limestone soil and meticulous vinification in barrels and steel vats.
Enchevêtrer - Blanc de Noirs
This bi-plot cuvée combines grapes from the "La Chevêtrée" and "La Grande Côte" lieu-dits. This 100% Pinot Noir Blanc de Noirs captures the power and minerality of the limestone-clay-silt soils. Vinified separately for each plot, then blended before bottling, Enchevêtrer is a true ode to the Champagne terroir.
Jus Rouge - Pinot Noir
The estate also explores the potential of Coteaux Champenois hillside wines with micro-cuvées such as Jus Rouge, a red wine made from Pinot Noir.
