This historical and iconic vineyard of Chateauneuf du Pape (rhone valley) covers 100 Ha in one single huge plot located North-East of the designation area, in Coudoulet village. Beaucastel's origins date back from 1549. In 1999, Pierre TRAMIER's family took over the Beaucastel estate, and subsequently passed it on to the family's son-in-law, Pierre PERRIN (his grandchildren are now running the Chateau de Beaucastel). The terroir is made of rounded pebbles (the famous galets roules), which is particularity representative and characteristic of that part of the Protected Designation of Origin. Besides, the heavy clay soils limit the water stress during the generally very hot summers of the Vaucluse region.

The estate produces different cuvees, including a red and a white Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet which represent ¼ of the whole production, and a Chateauneuf du Pape wine that is still being produced from the 13 grape varieties that are allowed in the designation (which is quite rare nowadays). Two white cuvees are also produced. A classic though excellent one that is mainly made of Roussanne, and an outstanding Roussanne vieilles-vignes cuvee. The latest has such amplitude on the palate that it can only get better over time. Beaucastel's red wines particular identity comes from the fact that they're made from a blend of many grape varieties, but also from the Mourvedre grape variety (which accounts for 1/3 of the whole blend), which is used in the same quantity as the Grenache, the most used variety in the designation. 

To conclude, the rare red Chateauneuf-du-Pape cuvee Hommage a Jacques Perrin, is only produced in exceptional years. It is an iconic wine of the designation, and its price can reach dizzying heights. The chateau de Beaucastel will always be a true example of what the Chateauneuf du Pape PDO has to offer. Those of you who are lucky enough to own a bottle of this wine will have to be patient and let the wine age, just like the famous 1998 vintage that is now a delightful wine sold at a reasonable price. In the Vaucluse region, Beaucastel means tradition. This estate produces a huge number of bottles, but that doesn't mean that Southern rhone wine lovers will find them easily. Indeed, international critics have been full of praise for these wines, thanks to the cuvees' qualitative consistency, even if other estates can sometimes challenge this renowned winery of Chateauneuf du Pape.
