History of Château Batailley

The name "Château Batailley" originates from a significant event in French history: the battle that took place in 1453 on the estate's lands, marking the end of the Hundred Years' War and the recapture of the neighbouring Château Latour by the French. This historical connection gives the estate a special aura, anchored in collective memory.

The first vines of Château Batailley were planted in the 17th century, but it was in the 18th century that the estate flourished when it was acquired by the Saint-Martin family. In 1791, the two Saint-Martin sisters sold their shares to Guillaume Pécholier, a Bordeaux wine merchant, who would play a key role in the vineyard's development. However, it was Daniel Guestier, a member of the famous Barton & Guestier trading house, who truly modernised the estate after acquiring it in 1816. He expanded the vineyard, improved the quality of the wines, and made Château Batailley a key player in the Médoc.

In 1855, thanks to Daniel Guestier's efforts, Château Batailley was classified as a Fifth Grand Cru, a distinction that sealed its reputation in the wine world. Over generations, the estate passed through the hands of several influential families, including the Halphens and the Bories. Today, Château Batailley belongs to the Castéja family, who, under the direction of Philippe Castéja, perpetuate the tradition of viticultural excellence.

Robert Parker awarded a score of 95/100 to the 1959 and 1949 vintages of Château Batailley, reflecting the robustness and character of these Pauillac wines.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Batailley

The Château Batailley vineyard benefits from an exceptional location within the Pauillac appellation, on the left bank of the Gironde, in the heart of the Médoc. The proximity to the Gironde estuary provides a particularly favourable oceanic microclimate for vine cultivation, protecting the vines from temperature extremes and frosts.

The estate spans 60 hectares, divided into several blocks, which are themselves subdivided into 60 distinct plots. The vineyard soil is mainly composed of deep old Günz gravel, with layers of silica and sand, ensuring excellent natural drainage. These characteristics allow Château Batailley to produce rich and powerful wines, marked by aromas of black fruits and spicy notes.

The estate's grape varieties reflect the typicity of the Pauillac appellation, with a predominance of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), followed by Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (3%), and Petit Verdot (2%). The vines, averaging 40 years old, are planted at a high density of 8,500 vines per hectare, promoting low production per vine and optimal concentration of aromas in the grapes.

Château Batailley applies the principles of sustainable viticulture, aiming to minimise environmental impact while maximising wine quality. The estate is also certified High Environmental Value (HEV) level 3, attesting to its continuous efforts in sustainable development.

Vinification at Château Batailley

Vinification at Château Batailley combines tradition and modernity. Each plot is hand-harvested when the grapes have reached full maturity, ensuring optimal quality. Once harvested, the grapes undergo a double sorting: first in the vineyard, then in the winery, where they are destemmed and crushed before being placed in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats with a capacity of 100 to 130 hectolitres.

Alcoholic fermentation takes place at low temperature (24 to 26°C), preserving fruity aromas and ensuring gentle tannin extraction. Then, a post-fermentation maceration at high temperature (30 to 32°C) is carried out to refine the tannins and bring complexity to the wine.

Malolactic fermentation, which transforms malic acid into lactic acid to soften the wine, is done in both vats and barrels. The vinification process lasts between 20 and 25 days, before the wines are aged in French oak barrels for a minimum of 12 months.

Each year, 60% of the barrels used are new, bringing subtle aromas of vanilla and toast to the wine. Every 3 to 4 months, racking is performed to clarify the wine and refine its profile. Before bottling, the wines are clarified using fresh egg whites, a traditional method that contributes to their brilliance and purity.

The Cuvées of Château Batailley

Château Batailley - 1st wine

The first wine of Château Batailley, classified as a Fifth Grand Cru since 1855, is the pure expression of the Pauillac appellation. It is distinguished by its dark ruby colour, its intense bouquet of black and red fruit aromas, as well as its spicy notes. On the palate, this wine is well-structured, with fine tannins and pronounced blackcurrant flavours. Its long finish and ageing potential make it a remarkable wine, capable of ageing for several decades.

Lions de Batailley - 2nd wine

The estate's second wine, Lions de Batailley, presents a beautiful garnet colour and an elegant bouquet of ripe fruits and spices. On the palate, it offers a beautiful structure, with silky tannins and indulgent notes of chocolate and coffee. Although more accessible in its youth than the first wine, it retains a beautiful complexity and a persistent finish.

Pauillac de Batailley - 3rd wine

The estate's third wine, Pauillac de Batailley, completes the range with an appealing profile and great finesse. It is distinguished by aromas of red fruits and graphite, a dense and elegant structure, and a fruity finish. It is a harmonious wine, perfect for more immediate tasting, while retaining a good ageing potential.
