Our view on the 1987 vintage

The wines of the 1987 vintage are of quite low quality for the Bordeaux wines because 2 weeks of rain came to dilute the grapes just before the harvest (especially the Cabernet Sauvignon wines). As a result, the red wines of Bordeaux were quite fine and distinguished, but with a reduced aging time, because of their dilution, despite the maturity of the grapes. However, the Merlot having been harvested before the rains, the wines of the Right Bank of Bordeaux (Saint Emilion, Pomerol) , gave good results in a fruity, smooth, and round profile (1987 Chateau Ausone, 1987 Chateau Clinet). Correct 1987 vintage in white Bordeaux but quite mediocre in Sauternes: the 1987 vintage produced wines whose peak is probably exceeded. In red Burgundy, the quality of the 1987 vintage was good, with structured wines of average aging, some of which were excellent (Domaine Joseph Roty in Gevrey Chambertin and Dujac in Morey Saint Denis). The white Burgundy wines of the Cote de Beaune are less successful. Rather weak 1987 vintage in Champagne, as for the 1987 wines of the Rhone, the 1987 Cote Rotie being illustrated, however, by producing better wines than the rest. No notable successes in 1987 Loire or 1987 Alsace wines.
