The Edmond Vatan estate and its production

 The Vatan family owned 5 hectares of vines in Chavignol, and when Anne's father Edmond retired, he decided to keep his most beautiful parcel, the one and only Clos de La Néore in Monts Damnés. Anne, an archaeologist by trade, returned to Chavignol in 2008 to look after it. Domaine Vatan produces the famous Sancerre Le Clos de la Néore, which is the most sought-after Sancerre wine in the world... and probably the most confidential, as only around 4,000 bottles are produced each year (depending on the weather conditions of the vintage). Such a small production can certainly be considered rare and confidential.

The terroir of Domaine Edmond Vatan

The vines of this Clos de la Néore Edmond Vatan are planted on clay-limestone soil rich in shells, which gives it a very mineral, salty finish that is comparable to that of the Chablis terroir. This parcel at Monts Damnés faces due south, and is a truly exceptional terroir, producing a Sancerre Blanc of incomparable richness thanks to the optimal conditions that allow the Sauvignon grape to flourish here. 

The Edmond Vatan estate wine: Le Clos de la Néore

Le Clos de la Néore is an exceptional great white wine from Sancerre, offering aromas of white fruit, citrus fruit and pineapple, as well as stony, herbaceous and aniseed notes. On the palate, the wine is pure, crystalline and very light, perfectly balanced and very persistent. The expertise of the Vatan family has, of course, transcended the canons of the appellation, and while Edmond, the father who founded Domaine Vatan and laid the foundations for its success, is no longer with us, his daughter Anne is in charge of production with the same joy: vintage after vintage, the wines are racy and sublime.
