History of Brouilly

The Brouilly Cru, one of the ten crus of Beaujolais, has a rich history dating back several centuries. The establishment of viticulture in this region dates back to Roman times, but it was during the Middle Ages that vine cultivation flourished. Brouilly takes its name from the eponymous mountain, Mont Brouilly, which dominates the region. Official recognition as a cru was granted in 1936 with the creation of controlled designations of origin (AOC) in Beaujolais.

Terroirs and Vines of Brouilly

Brouilly extends over approximately 1,300 hectares of hills, primarily composed of pink granite. The unique terroir is marked by decomposed granite soils, imparting distinctive minerality to the wines. The vines, mainly planted with the Gamay grape, benefit from optimal exposure on the slopes of Mont Brouilly, allowing for the optimal maturation of the grapes.

Vignerons in Brouilly are attentive to preserving the terroir, implementing environmentally friendly cultivation practices. Some also opt for biodynamic approaches to promote biodiversity and the natural balance of the vineyard.

Profile of Brouilly Wines

Brouilly wines are distinguished by their fruity character, freshness, and accessibility. Here are some characteristics of the profile of Brouilly wines:

Aromas and Flavors: Brouilly offers expressive aromas of red fruits such as cherry, raspberry, and strawberry. These wines may also present subtle floral notes, creating an enticing aromatic bouquet.

Light Structure: Brouilly wines are generally light to medium-bodied. Their delicate and fresh character makes them particularly suitable for early consumption, although some vintages can age well.

Freshness and Flexibility: Mouth freshness is a distinct characteristic of Brouilly wines. Balanced acidity contributes to their flexibility, creating wines that are easy to drink, especially in their youth.

Accessibility: Brouilly wines are renowned for their accessibility. Their fruity and balanced profile makes them enjoyable to taste right after release, offering a pleasant tasting experience.

Gastronomic Versatility: Due to their lightness and freshness, Brouilly wines pair well with a variety of dishes, including charcuterie, poultry, Mediterranean dishes, and light cheeses.
