Our view on the 2005 vintage

2005 was an exceptional vintage in Bordeaux! A superb spring, a magnificent summer, and ideal weather conditions during the harvest, the wine producers could not have asked for better. The 2005 vintage is characterized by the richness and structure of the red wines, both acquired during a slow and regular ripening (as it is often the case in great vintages in Bordeaux). On the other hand, the red wines of Bordeaux will require patience, because they are very tannic and do not have the early friendliness of the wines of 1982 or the wines of 1990. You will need to cellar them for a long time, because their aging potential seems enormous. The future will determine whether the 2005 Medoc Crus Classes will live up to their exceptional reputation. The designations further south (2005 Margaux, 2005), and the Right Bank (2005 Pomerol and 2005 Saint Emilion) seem to be able to be approached earlier thanks to an explosive fruitiness. The 2005 dry white wines of Bordeaux are very successful. Excellent and powerful 2005 Sauternes wines (however more on roasted and candied flavours, than the wines from the 2001 vintage) In Burgundy, the wines of 2005 are also very good, with an advantage to red Burgundy wines that got everything to produce a great 2005 vintage, but you will need patience as the reds are tannic and closed in their youth, and that the 2005 1er crus and 2005 Grands Crus wines will require patience if you want to taste them at their peak. 2005 Burgundy red wines will probably reach their 20 years of age (and more) before being at the top of what they can offer. Looking at white Burgundy, the year 2005 marks a rich and opulent vintage, and the wines of the Cote de Beaune (2005 Meursault, 2005 Puligny Montrachet) must be opened before the reds. The 2005 vintage is very successful and more accessible in Chablis. Champagne offers a fairly decent vintage but which can sometimes lack a bit of freshness. The Rhone Valley produced great red wines as the 2005 Cote Rotie and 2005 Hermitage (dense and powerful). In the Southern Rhone Valley, 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape and 2005 Gigondas are excellent, with great aging potential. The Loire Valley experienced very low rainfall in 2005, and the wines there are very successful in both red and white colour. In Alsace, the Riesling experienced maturity blockages in the light sectors, and the year 2005 was more favourable for Pinot Noir and Late-Harvest wines. Excellent 2005 Cahors in the South West (Le Cedre).
