History of Château Pouget

Château Pouget takes its name from François Antoine Pouget, to whom the property was bequeathed in 1748. Located in Margaux, in the Médoc, the estate is part of the great tradition of Bordeaux vineyards, cultivating a heritage of more than three centuries. François Antoine Pouget, an influential figure of the 18th century, was known for his expertise in viticulture, and his work laid the foundation for what has become one of the Classified Growths of the Médoc.

The Marshal Duke of Richelieu, a great admirer of Pouget wines, left an indelible mark on the estate by giving it a coat of arms accompanied by a poetic motto that still resonates on the labels today: "Love will extend its power over your heart, Your word will be clear as the song of the Rooster, Equal to the Lion you will not fear the shock, If with this nectar you fill your belly."

In 1855, Château Pouget was elevated to the rank of Fourth Classified Growth during the famous Imperial Classification, an honour that definitively consecrated the quality of its wines. Since 1906, the Guillemet family has been managing the estate with rigour and passion. Lucien Guillemet, the current technical director, ensures the perpetuation of the quality heritage while integrating modern advances to respect the terroir and surrounding biodiversity.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Pouget

The Château Pouget vineyard extends over 10 hectares of lean gravels on the left bank, typical of the prestigious Margaux appellation. These gravelly soils, composed of small stones and sand, play an essential role in the maturation of the grapes. The gravels allow perfect drainage, promoting optimal concentration of aromas and a beautiful tannic structure, essential for wines with ageing potential.

The vineyard is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, the king grape variety of the region, which brings structure and longevity to the wines. Merlot, which represents 30% of the plantings, brings suppleness and roundness, while Cabernet Franc, present at 10%, contributes to the aromatic complexity and elegance of the blends. The vines, averaging over 35 years old, are cultivated with respect for the environment and tradition. Since 2017, the estate has been certified organic, guaranteeing practices that respect local biodiversity and sustainable viticulture.

The care given to the vines throughout the year allows for grapes of exceptional quality. Pruning, de-budding, and leaf removal are meticulously carried out to promote good exposure of the bunches to the sun and controlled yield, thus ensuring perfect ripeness of the fruit. The harvest, carried out by hand, allows for rigorous sorting of the grapes, ensuring that only the best enter the production of Château Pouget wines.

Winemaking at Château Pouget

Winemaking at Château Pouget is a process combining tradition and modernity. Each plot of the vineyard is vinified separately to preserve the identity and unique character of each terroir. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, a process that allows for precise extraction of aromas and tannins.

The maceration of the grapes lasts between 8 and 35 days depending on the nature of the vintage, thus offering optimal complexity and aromatic richness. Young vines, on the other hand, are subjected to lighter extractions, which allows for more fruity wines, intended for the production of the estate's second wines.

Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels, bringing additional roundness to the wines. Ageing then takes place in French oak barrels, 30 to 50% of which are new, for 12 to 24 months. This crucial stage allows the wines to develop their aromatic complexity, tannic structure, and ageing ability. The most promising lots are carefully blended to create the Château Pouget cuvées, while the others are destined for the production of second wines.

The Cuvées of Château Pouget

Château Pouget - Grand Vin

Château Pouget, Classified Growth of Margaux, is the flagship of the estate. This wine is distinguished by its elegance, depth, and ability to age. Recent vintages reveal a dense and deep colour, a complex nose of black fruits and spices, and aromas of undergrowth that develop over time. On the palate, the attack is frank and lively, followed by a sensation of volume, enveloping the palate with silky and powerful tannins. This wine is the perfect expression of the Margaux terroir, combining finesse, power, and balance.

Antoine Pouget - Second Wine

Antoine Pouget is the estate's second wine, made from the young vines of the Château. This wine is distinguished by its fruity character, roundness, and accessibility. Less structured than the first wine, it is nonetheless seductive with its aromas of ripe red fruits and subtle woody notes. Antoine Pouget is a rich and silky wine, ideal for more immediate consumption while retaining a respectable ageing potential. It pays homage to François Antoine Pouget, founder of the estate, and testifies to the Château's expertise in producing harmonious and refined wines.
