History of Château La Fleur-Pétrus

Founded several centuries ago, Château La Fleur-Pétrus takes its name from the localities of Pétrus and La Fleur, situated on the Pomerol plateau. The first official mention of the estate dates back to the 19th century, when the vineyard was still modest, producing about 5,000 bottles per year under the name "Pétrus-Lafleur". At the time, the estate belonged to the Constant family, who also owned Château Clinet.

In 1950, Jean-Pierre Moueix, a renowned wine merchant established in Libourne, acquired the estate, recognising the extraordinary potential of the Pomerol terroirs. This acquisition marked a decisive turning point for La Fleur-Pétrus, and under the management of the Moueix family, the quality of the château's wines would continue to grow. In 1994, the addition of 4 hectares of old vines from Château Le Gay reinforced the power and complexity of the cuvées produced.

Today, Christian Moueix, Jean-Pierre's son, manages the estate, perpetuating the family heritage and pursuing the quest for excellence. The technical team has been led by Éric Murisasco since 2007, with the support of the famous oenologist Jean-Claude Berrouet, consultant to the Moueix family.

The 2010 vintage of Château La Fleur-Pétrus received 98/100 from Robert Parker, and the 2018, 2009 and 2016 vintages received 97/100, illustrating the quality of this great Pomerol wine.

Terroirs and Vines of Château La Fleur-Pétrus

Château La Fleur-Pétrus now extends over 18.7 hectares, situated at an altitude varying from 33 to 38 metres on the prestigious Pomerol plateau. This unique vineyard benefits from a mosaic of complex soils, ranging from deep old gravels to white clays, giving the estate's wines their own identity and a harmonious balance between power and elegance.

The vineyard is predominantly planted with Merlot (91%), which brings suppleness and richness to the wines. Cabernet Franc (6%) contributes to the structure and complexity, while Petit Verdot (3%), recently integrated into the blend, brings a spicy touch and an additional dimension to the cuvées.

These vines, with an average age of 40 years, are cultivated in an environmentally friendly manner, with HVE 3 (High Environmental Value) certification. Sustainable farming, manual green harvesting and meticulous soil work contribute to the authentic expression of the terroir in each bottle produced.

Vinification at Château La Fleur-Pétrus

Vinification at Château La Fleur-Pétrus reflects meticulous attention at every stage, from harvest to bottling. The grapes are harvested by hand, with a double sorting, manual and optical, to ensure impeccable quality of the selected berries. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats, allowing precise control of temperatures and gentle extraction of aromas and tannins.

Macerations are prolonged and controlled to extract all the richness of the fruit without excess, bringing finesse and balance to the wines. Once fermentation is complete, the wines are aged for 16 to 18 months in oak barrels, 50% of which are new, contributing to their structure and ageing potential.

The integration of Petit Verdot into the blend since 2015 marks an important evolution in the style of La Fleur-Pétrus wines, bringing more depth and complexity, while remaining faithful to the estate's characteristic elegance.

The cuvées of Château La Fleur-Pétrus

Château La Fleur-Pétrus produces cuvées of great finesse and exceptional complexity, marked by their ability to evolve beautifully over time. The estate's main wine, Château La Fleur-Pétrus, is the result of a blend dominated by Merlot, accompanied by Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot.

Château La Fleur-Pétrus

This flagship cuvée is a wine of rare elegance, combining aromatic richness and silky tannin structure. On the palate, it is distinguished by notes of black fruits, violet, truffle and spices, with a long velvety finish. Its ageing potential is exceptional, and it refines with time, revealing fascinating tertiary aromas of undergrowth and leather. Recent vintages, such as 2015, 2016 and 2018, are particularly remarkable, testifying to the expertise of the technical team.

The years 1998, 2000 and 2009 are considered among the greatest vintages of La Fleur-Pétrus, with special mention for 2010, which is among the "best vintages" on Robert Parker Jr.'s prestigious list.
