History of Château Trotanoy

The history of Château Trotanoy dates back to the 18th century when the Giraud family, royal brokers in Libourne, acquired the estate. At that time, Trotanoy's lands were known by the unflattering name 'Trop Ennuie' or 'Trop Anoi', referring to the difficulty of working on this challenging soil. The Giraud family, aware of the negative impact of such a name, decided to change it to 'Trotanoy'. This change marked the beginning of a new era for this vineyard, which would quickly rise to become one of Pomerol's best growths in the 19th century.

However, through crises and complex successions, the estate's area reduced from 25 hectares to just over 7 hectares by the mid-20th century. In 1953, Château Trotanoy was acquired by Jean-Pierre Moueix, an influential figure in the Bordeaux wine industry, who also owned the famous Château Petrus. Under the Moueix family's direction, the estate regained its former glory, producing wines of exceptional quality and becoming one of Pomerol's greatest growths.

Today, Château Trotanoy is operated by Christian Moueix, Jean-Pierre's son, with the help of his son Edouard. The technical management is overseen by Éric Murisasco, who benefits from the expert advice of Jean-Claude Berrouet, the estate's former legendary oenologist.

Robert Parker awarded 99/100 to the 2016, 1998 and 2018 vintages of Château Trotanoy, and 98/100 to the 1961, 1964 and 1959, confirming the depth and structure of this great Pomerol wine.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Trotanoy

The terroir of Château Trotanoy is one of the richest and most complex in the Pomerol appellation. The vineyard spans 7.2 hectares, divided between clayey gravel and deep black clay resting on an iron-rich subsoil. These unique geological characteristics give Trotanoy wine remarkable power and depth, as well as a dense tannic structure ideal for ageing.

The vineyard comprises two distinct soil types: the upper part, rich in gravel, and the more clayey soils on the lower slopes. This mixture of textures contributes to the wine's complexity, bringing both a high concentration of fruit and a mineral freshness.

The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot, the king grape of Bordeaux's right bank, which represents 88% of the planted area, while Cabernet Franc makes up the remaining 12%. The vines are an average of 35 years old, with some plots containing vines over 60 years old that escaped the devastating frosts of 1956. These vines, deeply rooted in the challenging soils, offer low yields but exceptional quality.

The vineyard is managed traditionally, with regular soil work (ploughing, thinning, leaf removal) to ensure optimal grape ripening. The harvest is carried out by hand, with a meticulous double sorting to retain only the best fruit.

Winemaking at Château Trotanoy

At Château Trotanoy, winemaking is carried out with the utmost respect for tradition, while using modern technologies to optimise wine quality. After the harvest, the grapes are manually and optically sorted before being destemmed and placed in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats for fermentation.

Extractions are gentle and carefully controlled to avoid overpowering the wine, while preserving the freshness and elegance of the fruit. This approach results in structured wines that are never heavy or overly tannic.

Once fermentation is complete, the wine is aged for 12 to 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 50% are new. Ageing is essential to bring complexity to the wine and a structure suitable for very long ageing. The wood, used sparingly, never dominates the fruit but subtly coats the tannins and adds delicate aromas of smoke and spices.

The cuvées of Château Trotanoy

Château Trotanoy primarily produces two cuvées:

Château Trotanoy

The estate's flagship wine, Château Trotanoy, is renowned for its powerful and refined style. With a dark and deep colour, it offers a complex bouquet of black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), flowers (violet), and subtle notes of smoke and spices. On the palate, the wine is velvety, with ripe and silky tannins. The citrus freshness brings a pleasant tension, perfectly balancing the richness of the fruit. This wine has exceptional ageing potential and can improve for several decades. Vintages such as 2010, 2016, 2018 and 2019 are particularly remarkable, offering wines of rare decadence and impressive complexity.

L'Espérance de Trotanoy

L'Espérance de Trotanoy is the estate's second wine, produced from specific plots or declassified lots that do not enter the blend of the grand vin. Introduced in 2009, it is not produced every year, only when quality permits. L'Espérance is a more accessible wine in its youth, with a fruity and elegant profile, while retaining Trotanoy's signature, notably a beautiful tannic structure. This wine represents an excellent alternative for discovering the world of Trotanoy at a more affordable price.
