The history of Château Gloria is inseparable from that of its creator, Henri Martin, whose vision has shaped this atypical domain. Born in 1903, Martin grew up in the Bordeaux wine world, descending from a line of coopers and winegrowers in Beychevelle. During the Second World War, in 1942, he made his first purchase of 6 hectares of vines belonging to the prestigious Château Beychevelle. This act, encouraged by Jean-Charles Cazes, Martin's friend and an influential figure in Bordeaux, marks the beginning of a unique endeavour.
Henri Martin methodically pursued his ambitious project: over the years, he acquired parcels of classified growths from owners in Saint-Julien. His approach allowed him to piece together, bit by bit, a 44-hectare vineyard, composed of gravelly soils ideal for vine cultivation. This domain then took the name "Gloria", inspired by a neighbouring lieu-dit.
Despite the quality of its terroirs, Château Gloria has never been included in the 1855 classification of crus, as it was created long after this date. However, this absence has never limited its recognition among the greatest non-classified crus of the Médoc. In the 1980s, Henri Martin further expanded his wine estate by also acquiring Château Saint-Pierre, a fourth classified growth. Upon his death in 1991, his daughter Françoise and son-in-law Jean-Louis Triaud took over the management of the domain, continuing the vision of excellence initiated by Martin.
The Château Gloria terroir now extends over 50 hectares within the Saint-Julien appellation, spread across three specific zones with distinct characteristics. There are parcels in the vicinity of Château Beychevelle, another zone located to the west of the village, and a third area bordering the inner vineyards of Château Pichon Lalande, adjacent to Pauillac. These soils, composed of Günz gravel, clay and sand, provide an ideal setting for the cultivation of traditional Bordeaux grape varieties.
The vineyard is planted with the classic Saint-Julien grape composition, featuring 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines, around 45 years old, ensures consistently mature and high-quality grapes, essential for the production of great wines. The well-maintained vines benefit from the latest techniques, particularly since recent renovations that have seen the installation of state-of-the-art equipment in the winery.
The domain's teams also pay special attention to preserving the natural balance of the terroir, and in 2021 Château Gloria fully committed to 100% organic viticulture, achieving official certification in 2024. Thanks to this constant care, the Château Gloria terroir continues to give birth to high-quality grapes, perfectly balanced between power and finesse.
The winemaking process at Château Gloria respects traditional methods while incorporating cutting-edge technologies to optimise wine quality. The harvests are entirely manual, allowing for rigorous selection of the grapes before transformation. The grapes are then sorted and transferred into 76 temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, ranging in size from 50 to 178 hectolitres, for precise parcel-by-parcel monitoring.
After alcoholic fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in oak barrels, a technique that gives it a softer, rounder texture. The ageing process then continues for 14 months, with 40% of the barrels renewed each year. This choice of predominantly French oak barrels lends the Château Gloria wines their characteristic finesse and aromatic complexity. The maturation is carefully controlled, allowing the tannins to soften without masking the freshness and fruit expression.
Since 2016, the domain has invested in a complete renovation of its winemaking facilities, including a new barrel cellar and modern tasting areas. This perfected infrastructure allows for optimal management of the winemaking process and ensures consistent quality of the wines produced.
The domain primarily offers two vintages, each with its own distinct identity:
Château Gloria
This is the main vintage of the domain, representative of the Saint-Julien appellation and the characteristic style of the Médoc crus. With a deep robe and complex aromas of black fruits, spices and oaky notes, Château Gloria seduces with its intensity and structure. On the palate, it reveals well-integrated tannins and a long finish. This complete and concentrated wine benefits from a remarkable ageing potential, able to evolve harmoniously for decades. However, it can also be appreciated from five years of age for those who enjoy young wines with fruity aromas.
Esprit de Gloria
Formerly known as Château Peymartin, Esprit de Gloria is the domain's second wine. Produced from the same grape varieties and terroirs, it benefits from the same care given to the vines and winemaking as the main vintage. Esprit de Gloria presents a more accessible structure, with immediate aromas of red fruits and a pleasant freshness. This wine is ideal for those who wish to discover the style of Château Gloria in a softer, less tannic version, while still retaining the typicity of Saint-Julien.
The finest vintages of Margaux, one of Bordeaux's most prestigious wines, are renowned for their finesse and elegance. Among the most remarkable years are 1959, 1983, 1986, 1990, 1995, 1996 and 1999, celebrated for their complexity and longevity. Recent vintages such as 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015, and 2016 are also highly regarded for their structure and richness. Other years such as 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 confirm Margaux's consistency in producing exceptional wines, symbolising Bordeaux excellence.
