Our view on the 1961 vintage

A very big year in Bordeaux, 1961 was a legendary vintage that produced very great wines. Rare and extremely requested bottles due to a very low volume of harvest. August and September were sunny bringing concentration. The grapes were small but magnificent and their thick skins brought colour and tannins. The 1961 red Bordeaux are exceptional in all designations and the vintage is very homogeneous. Only the sweet white wines (1961 Sauternes) produced wines of slightly lower quality (although very good). The aging potential of the 1961 red Bordeaux is absolutely great. In Burgundy, the 1961 vintage is also very good both in red and white. In Champagne, the year is renowned and even reveals some icons (1961 Bollinger RD or cuvee William Deutz 1961). A great vintage also in the Rhone where the 1961 Hermitage la Chapelle from Jaboulet is one of the legendary bottles. The 1961 Chateauneuf du Pape are powerful and of long ageing potential. In Alsace, the vintage is exceptional and Jean Hugel considered it the best of his career (even going beyond 1959). In Loire the wines of 1961 are good and also have a very good reputation.
